The international community has renewed their support for the TFG yesterday. So whatever Puntland was doing it didnt work. But i also beleive TFG needs Puntland and vice versa. So i commend Farmaajo for doing whats expected and not being a bitch like the other members. With that said, what im really worried about is Puntland and its oil deal. With the corruption widespread and their piracy problems how can they search for Oil? :?

Mr. Farmaajo is now on a local radio telling puntlanders they are the backbone of the nation. He is saying i am sure reer puntland are the beacon of our society in terms of security, stability and progress. He promised that the TFG will play a very active role in building much needed infrastructure in Puntland. He is also saying we promise to give pland their share of international donations - lol. No way can Puntland throw us under the bus in any circumstance! He presented his case in two folds, addressing reer Puntland directly before he talked to Mr. Faroole. He said, Mr. Faroole is my friend and we were on the same page when we met in Djibouti. He said he is going to call him when he comes back home. We won't let pland discredit us, Somalia is in shambles as it stands now and this move will further damage our credibility. TFG is in need of Pland! He said pland should know that if Mr. Godane runs us over, his next stop will be Bosaso. Reer pland must think hard.

Farmaajo is a brilliant guy. He spoke like a real smart ass politician. A lot of somali leaders would make things worse. If he stays the course and fulfills these promises, he will definitely win hearts and minds of many people around here. He promised to build dams too :)
Were expecting the top leaderhsip of TFG to be in Garowe in the next 72 hours on their nees, only to dissappoint them. Farmaajo can sweet talk all he wants but it was a major descion for Puntland to cut ties with the TFG and something we can't go back on. 8-)

Puntland shuns Somali government

The autonomous region of Puntland in Somalia has announced that it will break with the federal government based in the embattled capital, Mogadishu.

After a special meeting of Abdirahman Mohammed Farole's presidential cabinet on Sunday, the government issued a statement saying that the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) "does not represent Puntland in international forums" and that the United Nations Political Office for Somalia should "reconsider its position and support for the TFG at the expense of other Somali stakeholders."

Puntland, unlike the breakaway region of Somaliland to the west, does not consider itself an independent country. Until now, it had supported the federal government, which is backed by the international community but has been greatly weakened by an ongoing war against rebels who are seeking its overthrow.

The statement, read by Daud Mohamed Omar, the planning and international cooperation minister, criticised the Mogadishu government for its "unwillingness to actively support federalism for Somalia in violation of the TFG charter," according to a report by Radio Garowe, a community radio station based in Garowe, the Puntland capital.

Losing Puntland is a blow to the government in Mogadishu, which is led by 45-year-old president Sharif Ahmed and exerts very little control over Somalia, relying on military support from Western governments, such as the United States, to keep rebels from the Al-Shebab movement from overrunning the capital.

Al-Shebab has declared that it is fighting to overthrow the federal government and institute sharia, Islamic law.

Miffed

In its statement on Sunday, the Puntland government complained that Ahmed had left it out of the recent UN-led Djibouti Peace Process, which laid out the terms of cooperation between the federal government and other groups within Somalia.

"Puntland shall not cooperate with the TFG until a legitimate and representative federal government is established and agreed upon by the legitimate stakeholders in Somalia," the statement said, adding that Puntland also opposed any extension in the TFG's authority, which is set to expire this year.

Puntland is regarded as one of the most stable areas inside Somalia. Many people displaced from the southern parts of the country have moved to Boosaaso, a major port on its north coast. Puntland also recently organised and hosted a national football tournament, the first of its kind in Somalia in 23 years.

Renewed Mandate in Doubt as Puntland Breaks Away From Somali Government

Michael Onyiego | Nairobi 18 January 2011

The Puntland region has decided to separate from the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia, dimming hopes for peace and stability as the government's internationally-backed mandate winds down.

In the midst of a campaign for an extension on its expiring mandate, Somalia’s U.N.-backed Transitional Federal Government was dealt a major blow when Puntland recently announced the end of its cooperation with the struggling administration in Mogadishu.

Puntland is a region in northeastern Somalia that has governed itself autonomously since 1998. Unlike neighbor Somaliland, which declared full independence in 1991, Puntland maintained ties to Mogadishu in the hope of eventually rejoining a stable, federated Somali state.

The Puntland region has enjoyed relative peace and even prosperity, when compared to the war-torn south. But Sunday’s announcement reflected a growing dissatisfaction by Puntland with what it described as marginalization by politicians in Mogadishu.

The announcement was justified by what the Puntland government decried as a lack of participation and representation at the Djibouti Peace Process. The meeting, held in 2008 and 2009, helped form the current Somali government, led by President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

The Puntland government also took issue with failure of the central government to share international development funds with other regions of Somalia.

According to analyst E.J. Hogendoorn of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group, however, the announcement was more a political maneuver than an attempt at separation.
"The statement is essentially a shot across the bow, saying that if you do not start giving us more political consideration or more resources we can go our own way," said Hogendoorn.

But the announcement does not bode well for the mandate of the transitional government, due to expire in August. One of the largest donors to Mogadishu is the United States, which recently unveiled a "Dual-Track" policy of simultaneously engaging the unrecognized state of Somaliland.

Some analysts are worried Puntland’s separation spells the end for a unified Somalia, with the emergence of smaller regional states more likely. Hogendoorn said, though, that the chances of an independence declaration from Puntland are slim.

"I think some people worry about that and that is certainly a possibility, but I do not see that happening anytime soon," said Hogendoorn. "People have seen what happened to Somaliland. Why go down that road? There are very few benefits that they will get from a declaration of independence."

Somaliland has been a declared independent state since 1991, but has yet to receive formal international recognition. Although it has held multiple successful elections and been hailed as an example for the region, it has until recently been largely ignored by international donors.

Though the clock is ticking on the transitional mandate, Hogendoorn believes it is possible to see the formation of a new government structure, with Puntland’s participation, come August.

somali boqor,

If Puntland wants to sustain what it has today, it must help the TFG at any cost. All TFG guys have their return tickets and nothing to lose but it is Pland that will lose everything if shababs show up at its doorsteps. In my opinion, Faroole should work with TFG or face impeachment. If you want shababs in Garowe then it is another story.

Promising move. Somalis need this kind of political savyness and reassurance to establish hope and trust. It maybe just rhetoric but I'm willing to stay positive...

Somalia: Puntland suspends cooperation with transitional gov’t

Source: (AHN) Reporter: Abdi Hajji Hussein

After an unusual meeting by the cabinet of Somalia’s semi–autonomous state of Puntland, the administration on Sunday proclaimed it had suspended cooperation with the transitional federal government (TFG) of Somalia.

Critics said the reason for the abrupt decision may be what Puntland indicated, that there are many unfulfilled promises and direct roadblocks to its internal wishes and aspirations from the Somali government side.

In a press conference in Garowe, Da’ud Mohammed Omar, Puntland’s minister of planning and international relations, said that a communiqué issued after the meeting announced that the "unanimously agreed [to] suspending all relations and cooperation with [the] transitional government.”

He said Puntland had called on the international community not to recognize Somalia's transitional government as a representative for Puntland, adding that the authorities thanked world nations for helping Somalia since 1991 when former dictator Mohammed Si’ad Barre was ousted from the country.

“All the ministers have decided not work again with TFG until all Somalia regions get big federal government,” he explained.

Puntland endorsed the United States' new dual-track policy and urged the United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) to reconsider its support of TFG, describing that it is something against other regions of Somalia like Puntland.

The semi-autonomous administration is ready to hold a reconciliation conference for all Somali political factions. It had strongly warned against extending Somali transitional government’s period, which is expected to expire in August.

This action by Puntland comes as the Somali president paid a visit this weekend to neighboring Djibouti where he had been invited by UNPOS. Some unconfirmed reports suggested the purpose of trip was to discuss TFG’s extension period after the expiration date in August.

Ninyahow the TFG is useless and it's President is an idiot who doesn't know what he is doing. Puntland has sustained what it has without any federal goverment's help for the last 12 years and can continue to do so. As for Al Shabaab don't worry the Adoons will keep them busy for as long as it takes. And when Shababs do show up at our doorsteps surely we will be ready for them.

Ps: This wasn't Faroole's decision along but the whole adminstration marka impeachment iyo that nonsense is not needed inadeer.
