This money is much better spent on training Somali's. Give me that kind of money and I would have a force up to crush Al Shabaab in a week. AMISOM is pretty much taking everything that would have went to Somalia

Brussels/Addis Ababa (dpa)- The European Union announced Monday that it will funnel an extra 66 million euros (93 million dollars) to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) so that the peacekeeping force can continue to operate in the conflict-plagued country.
The funds bring to 208 million euros the amount that the EU has given AMISOM since 2007. They will be used, among other things, to provide medical care, transport and allowances to the force.
'AMISOM does a vital job in Somalia, ensuring that human rights are respected, citizens are protected and internally displaced persons and refugees can return home in safety and dignity,' EU Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said in a statement.
'There is no development without security,' he added.
Piebalgs unveiled the funding at an annual joint meeting of African Union's finance and economy ministers in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
Germany had during a United Nations Security Council session earlier this month called on governments to strengthen AMISOM, saying that the human cost of the conflict in Somalia has become 'unacceptable.'
African Union peacekeepers have been backing Somali government troops in their fight against the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab, which is trying to oust the weak Western-backed government. Al-Shabaab nevertheless still controls large areas of south and central Somalia.
The Horn of Africa nation has been embroiled in chaos since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
Thousands of foreign fighters have flocked to the chaotic country in recent years to help the insurgency and plan regional attacks, according to diplomats and AMISOM officials.
