Another Hutu businessman offered to buy the Farm

Postby Monk-of-Mogadishu » Wed May 18, 2011 10:56 pm

This time they had a more reasonable offer. He wanted to rent 50 hectares (a mere 8% of our total acreage) at the rate of $5,000/month in a 20-30 year contract. As usual, it was rejected but I actually think it was a really good deal. My folks just feared the long-term ownership of the property and feared land abuse.

I admire Hutus, they are some of the most persistent and crude business people on earth; for 20 years these guys have been finding mysterious ways of getting a hold of us from weird places like Baraawe and Balcad and making the same offers - sometimes we just gave in. :geek:

When I take control I'm going rent part of the plot and use the cash to invest in other areas.

Where is your family's farm located? And do you know what crops this buyer is trying to grow there? These days it seems like all Somalis in the South are either growing Sesame seeds or Limes.

The farm is in Jamaame, each acre is within half a kilometer of the river. It stretches from a few miles south of town, through town and further north.

The thing with limes is that they're extremely valuable. They take 5 years to grow but the payoff is huge. Sesame is basically the rich man's corn; it takes the same length of time to grow but its payoff is huge due to it being more nutritious and fatty than corn, thus far more valuable. There's no money in corn, watermelon or other cheap produce; we do grow those but for local consumption, we grow fruits like limes for export to other countries.

We don't know what these Hutu gentleman want to grow, probably some hardcore cash crops like cotton. Our only dispute was that they didn't give us any details and they wanted massive autonomy over their operations.

I don't know why a farm in Jamaame would cost that much, but anything is possible in Somalia. People back home are buying land left and right like theres no tomorrow and it has a lot to do with simple economics. Right now, because of the ongoing war, land is very cheap relatively speaking and people with money are buying land as a long term investment. I know a Baadicade guy from Minnesota that was offered 250 grand dollars for a 75 acre undeveloped land in Afgoi, Sh/Hoose by.... Bunch of Waceysley guys that were barely 25 years old. I admire the business acumen of my people, no wonder they dominate the economies of East Africa

That's why I respect the Hutu nation, you guys are the real Jews of Somalia not MJs like everyone thinks. A Hutu will walk onto a mine field to recover some money but an MJ will go to the absolute most effort just to find a safe place to do business. For the amount of effort it takes for an MJ to build a warehouse in Qardho he can make 10 times more money in 10 times less hours if he just went somewhere like Jilib to flip a few properties. I know some millionaire Cali Salebaan & Cusman Maxamud families that abandoned gigantic farms in Janaale just to be safe in places like Bosaso; some are still ballin' but most have shabby little shops on back streets there.

Dynamic,

What many people don't realize is that the land value is much expensive than any where in East Africa. If you own land in Sh/Hoose or Sh/Dhexe it's wise to hold onto it. The price will jump substantially if peace returns.
