Opposition Emerges Against New Cabinet
Following Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali's announcement of the new cabinet by last week, opposition against the newly formed government has emerged. Gal-Mudug administration was quick to announce its disappointment with the new government by declaring that it will not recognize the new cabinet.
The president of the Gal-Mudug administration, Mohamed Ahmed Alim, alleged the prime minister was not respecting the Kampala Accord which called for wider discussions and negotiations with local administrations before selecting new ministers.
“The agreement was to have a strong and capable cabinet. The problem we have is the process in which the ministers are selected and the leadership qualities they possess,” he explained.
The president strongly expressed his disappointment with the new ministers’ leadership qualities and cast a doubt on how much they will be able to achieve.
“The new cabinet will not be able to achieve much without having close ties with local population and their failure will be a shame to the TFG,” he said in a press conference held in the administration’s capital of Galkayo.
Gal-Mudug is the first state to announce its opposition against the new cabinet. Although President Alim claims their opposition is based on the way the cabinet was selected, political pundits and locals believe the lack of cabinet ministers who hail from Gal-Mudug region is the primary reason.
Gal-Mudug has always maintained a good relationship with Somalia's previous Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and how this will affect the new PM and cabinet remains to be seen.
Calls to the TFG officials to respond to the matter went unanswered.
Former President Endorses Cabinet
Meanwhile the former president of Somalia, Abdullahi Yusuf, who is living in exile in Yemen, has welcomed the new cabinet.
“I personally know Prime Minister Abdiweli. He is a man known for courage and has very powerful decision making abilities,” he said in a radio broadcast.
“As far as I know this government was selected on the basis of quality and knowledge. I believe this government will be able to achieve much and will lead the country out of the desperate situation,” said the former president.
He urged the Somali people to give the new government a time to execute its plans.
The new cabinet was endorsed on Saturday by the Somali parliament with 397 voting in favor of the new cabinet while some 21 MPs voted against the newly appointed 18 ministers.

Cabdullahi Yusuf, an Ex-Wife of Mengistu Haile Mariam shouldn't be hold to any prestige. He lost his creditability back in 1978.

The cabinet has also been rejected by Gedo. Gedo+Galmudug...hmmm, Abdiweli's government doesn't really have the confidence of the people.
