10 Killed, 20 Wounded In Fresh Fighting

At least ten people were killed and over 20 others injured in Mogadishu on Saturday morning after fresh fighting erupted between the militant al-Shabaab and the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) allied forces, security officials said.

This brings to 40 the total number of people killed over last two days.

The clashes started when the TFG and AMISOM forces launched a fierce attack around the main stadium and Bakara market, which have been held by the insurgents.

“Our forces have been able to take position around the market and some key streets which have been in the hands of the militia,” said General Abdihakin Yusuf Aden Dhego Badan, the Deputy Chief Commander of Somali National Forces.

Residents said al-Shabaab fighters had arrived on Friday night in ten vehicles from Lower and Middle Shabelle regions. They then took position along the key streets ready to attack the government forces.

Meanwhile, hundreds of residents, mostly women and children, have started fleeing from the heavy shelling.

The confrontation comes barely two days after airlift supplies by the World Food Program (WFP) landed in the Somali capital.
