Unidentified gunmen on Saturday assassinated a top security official in the semi-autonomous state of Puntland, eyewitnesses said on Sunday.

According to witnesses, the armed attacked shot and killed Hersi Jama Dhangad, the deputy chief commander of Garowe Security forces in the commercial capital.

Local residents told Somalia Report that four armed men attacked Dhangad with a pistol, while he was leaving a mosque shortly after the evening prayer.

“They were four. One of them shot at Dhangad’s head with four bullets, and he died instantly,” said Abshir Fowsi, a resident in Garowe.

Garowe security forces immediately launched a manhunt for the killers. However no arrests have been made.

Police officials told the local media that they were conducting investigations into the killing and vowed to capture the culprits.

The assassination of the officer comes in the wake of high-profile visits to the region by Somalia’s President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed and Prime Minister Abdiwali Mohamed Ali.

I don't understand how political officials are walking around without bodyguards or any protection. If this is legit news wassup with all the violence lately in Puntland, who's killing who?

Some people are getting desperate and are trying to cause instability in Puntland ,even going as far as lobbing a hand grenade at a crowd during the
13th anniversary. A lot of people involved have been arrested so far and the other assassins are going to get caught soon, Insha'allah.
