PaidMonk,

Its hard to imagine M4s in Somalia. Maybe a knocked out version by some third world country. Only few nations have the M4. Even the Sharif Presidential guards that are the most well trained & armed force in Somalia doesn't use M4s.

In reference to the PIA:
There are hard points like the Xe contract to train the intelligence security forces (a polite name for a government sanctioned militia). They are easy to spot with their Toyota Hiluxes, over gunned (12.7 and 50cal Brownings) and a mix of AK’s and M4’s.
Puntland is the dark horse of Somalia; everyone from Washington to Dubai is grooming it to become the caretaker of Somalia. M4's are a starter gift to Washington's favorite friend in Somalia. Shariif's presidential guards are just a small attachment, not a tactical unit - they are of little value to anyone but Shariif.

I commend Washington for dealing with the PIA directly instead of with the PL administration. There are too many liabilities with the PL administration, possible infiltration by radical Islamist sympathizers, discarded Dhulos officials who as a result ran to Hargeisa and pledged their new allegiance to Somaliland (God knows what information they divulged to their new bosses) and not to mention corruption in general. The PIA however is a homogenous entity since 2001, dominated by a trusted, verifiable set of people with a military background and who basically share the same political vision as Abdullahi Yusuf; a secular, capitalist Somalia.

I can see why Washington is investing heavily in the PIA, funding this organization as much as half the amount of PL admin's entire budget as well as direct training by Xe and tactical training in Djibouti. If it wasn't for their track record in the last decade since 2001, PIA would never have evolved. That's why it's good that the PL admin has virtually no control over the PIA. They would fuck it up.

The PIA has its faults, but I see them as heroes.Image

^ PIA, along with all of Puntland's security assets, are trained in Garowe and northern Bari. One of the state's important tag lines is the training of all Somali troops on Somali national soil.

Give me 10 GRADs, 20 STRELLAs, 40 MILAN, 20 DHUNSHILKEs, 1,000 RPGs and 1,000 PKMs, and AK-47s and I will be toasting the new Galmudug flag fluttering in the newly liberated Bossaso, home of the brotherly Ajuuraan.

It's a great weapon in close combat. True, the US had problems with it, and some US Special Forces even prefer the customized AK like the onetbis Pakistani Commando is holding. This is the same exact gun used by Sharif's Presidential Guards.

But the M4 has seen much improvement & it's the choice of many professionals

PaidMonk,

Alot of the articles written on the subject of Security Contractors are exaggerated for sensationalism. I highly doubt there are real M4s floating around in Somalia
