Dutch Goverment bans Khat

Postby Coeus » Tue Jan 10, 2012 10:10 am

The Dutch government Tuesday banned the use of khat, a leaf native to East Africa chewed for its stimulant properties mainly by the Netherlands' sizeable Somali community.

"The drug khat is banned," the Dutch Immigration, Health and Justice departments said in a joint statement.

Khat is grown in the Horn of Africa and has for centuries been chewed by users in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Yemen.

"The problem lies especially within the Somali community, which is much larger than the Kenyan or Yemeni communities within our country," immigration department spokesman Frank Wassenaar told AFP, adding there were about 27,000 Somalis living in the Netherlands.

"If taken in moderation there are no major problems, but an investigation showed it to be problematic among some 10 percent of khat users," leading to health and social issues, added the statement.

An independent report commissioned by the Dutch government has cited noise, littering and groups of men who "roam the streets perceived as threatening", as some of the effects.

With high unemployment and low education levels, the Dutch Somali community was "late" in terms of integration, the report said.

Imported legally via Amsterdam's Schiphol airport four times a week, khat is distributed throughout the Netherlands but also in Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, it added.

Around 843 tonnes of khat, worth a minimum 14 million euros (U$18 million) passed through Schiphol in 2010, up from 714 tonnes in 2009 and 693 tonnes in 2008.

Britain and the Netherlands currently allow the import, trade and consumption of khat, according to a European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction letter of July last year entitled "Drugs in focus."

Fifteen of the European Union's 27 states and Norway list khat as an illegal narcotic, while in the other EU countries, the plant was not subjected to any controls, the EMCDDA letter said.

It will push it underground and you will have what the Americans are doing. Acting all gangster and wrapping some dry, crispy leaves in small bags and standing in corners with a towel under their arm. Yh, not suspicious at all Adheer Maxamed Macalin Kuusow. It will push the prices even higher and that will force them dead beat fathers to beat their wives in front of their children for more money and she won't report it cos let's face it, she needs him to make more babies to scam the system. All in all, great.

Don't be an American. Simply put, as long as there is demand, there will be supply. Higher prices does not mean they will stop using it, it just means it will make them poorer and not invest their money in worthwhile things within their community. Jailing violet men will not solve the issue, I mean look at USA. If jails made people better then USA would be heaven. They will become repeat offenders or even worse, more violent as they don't have anything to lose. Again don't be naive with regards to the drug distribution being done only by old men. They hijabi gang of North America pimping Somali girls, etc also toke part in the Khat trade.

This will simply push it underground and make ordinary people criminals overnight.

Sxb move to USA. I don't like government meddling in people's lives. People are responsible for whatever they choose, I hate nanny states. If I was rich enough, I would be a tea party member.

Honestly big, meddling governments cripples the poor and stops them moving up the class system. It is disgraceful. If you look at the Somali communities in the diaspora. You would realize that there are more successful Somalis in East Africa and Middle East than all the Somalis in the Western Hemisphere.

Well you have a point there. But it is because Africa is virgin territory regarding business. And somalis excell there. However its a totally different thing succeding in the Western world. Because there you cannot profit good from opening small shops like in Kenya lol. A responsible goverment with good relationship with its people like in Scandinavia is a good model to follow. Sweden excels at almost everything much better then the US when statistics are compared. Somalia right now has anarchy & tribal rule.

The idea that a society does not "need" a goverment can not be fulfilled without a educated & morally responsible society. Implementing this idea for example in a non tribal country would be disastreous.

Implementing it in a tribal country would still not mean that it is now a country without goverment. Because tribal rule in itself is a goverment :|

I am not saying that government should be dismantled. It should be there defense, projects benefiting the public, healthcare, etc. But when they start dictating what you can and can't do and over regulation, that is the straw that will snap the camel's back. It suffocates everyone and stops them being achievers. It makes them lazy and waiting for Mama government for handouts.
