Somaliland: Glaxo SmithKline PLC to establish an office

HARGEISA — GlaxoSmithKline, one of the world’s leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare company held a press conference at Mansoor hotel in Hargeisa on Sunday February 12, 2012 to inform the Somaliland market that their company will begin importing to Somaliland all their pharmaceutical products. Galaxo SmithKline Plc. or GSK as it is known was formed back in 2000 after GlaxoWellcome merged with SmithKline which saw the creation of the third pharmaceutical company in the world. The multinational company has offices in more than one hundred countries around the world. Glaxo SmithKline’s Djibouti representative Mr. Said Omar who is the owner of DANKALE Pharmaceutical will be country manager. Dr. Farah Liban Ahmed who is one of the top pharmaceutical product importers to the country will be the sole distributor of all Glaxo SmithKline products from asthma, cancer, virus control, diabetes and many more products.

Sunday’s press meeting was attended by top Glaxo SmithKline officials in East Africa, Somaliland Health Ministry officials and Somaliland’s Quality Control Agency. GlaxoSmithKline representative to Djibouti and Somaliland, Dr. Said Omar spoke at the meeting. Dr. Said acknowledged the huge demand for quality pharmaceutical products in Somaliland and that Glaxo SmithKline will try to fill in the demand.
Finally, addressing the press was Director General of Somaliland Healthy Ministry, Mr. Ahmed Abdi Nuur; as he thanked all those that attended the meeting. Mr. Nuur promised to work with any company that will bring high quality pharmaceutical products to Somaliland.

The point of the corporation is to facilitate international investment in Somaliland and economic interaction for the benefit of the Somaliland people. As an unrecognised state, it is isolated. Despite its extraordinary achievements in stability and democracy, international donors cannot deal directly with its Government, and foreign investors face uncertainty about whether contracts—the basis of secure business—can be enforced. The point of the corporation is to establish an entity to circumvent that problem. Indeed, I hope that it might lead the Foreign Office, through our trade arrangements, to be able to underpin some of the potential for business development and trade with Somaliland, which is difficult at present.

Puntland is a pirate enclave with officials forcing the pirates to bribe them. If you ever for a second believed puntland is on the same development as Somaliland you are wrong. The high corruption that exists when a former Taxi driver is a leader of a clan enclave. For fucks sakes he doesnt even leave Garowe and visit the other clan enclave areas.
