A 16-year old girl was raped by three sons of Puntland officials last Monday, February 17, 2013 (read the story in Somali).
The accused rapists are Ahmed Abdi Hirsi ,the son of the Governor of Nugaal—Abdi Hirsi, (Qarjab), Mohamed Ali Hayaan , son of Ali Hayaan−former director of security in Puntland; and Abdirahman Nur Mohamed Garaase− a nephew of Suldaan Garaase, tribal chieftain of Ise Mohamoud. The three are now in custody.
The young woman, who was simply identified by her first name, Fadumo, was attending a wedding when the three perpetrators kidnapped her, took her to the outskirts of Garowe, raped her, and left her in the scene.
WardheerNews confirmed the rape charges with the relatives of the victim who hail from the Somali region in Ethiopia. The relatives told WardheerNews that they are asking Puntland authorities to investigate the crime and punish those convicted according to the law.
“We will not accept any attempt to put this matter under the rug or settled it out of court by using traditional elders,” a family member told WardheerNews.
The issue of rape is becoming endemic in some parts of Somalia. Last month, a woman, who claimed to have been raped by Somali government officers, and the journalist who interviewed her were sentenced to one year in jail in Mogadishu. The court’s ruling was widely condemned by human rights groups, the U.S State Department, the British government and the head of the United Nations.
