International fact finding team clears somalia of UN report allegations

An investigative team on Friday (September 6th) cleared Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his administration of corruption allegations brought about in the July report of the United Nations Monitoring Group on Somalia and Eritrea.

The team was comprised of attorneys from American law firm Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Porty & Ecker, and forensic accountants from global business advisory firm FTI Consultants, Inc. The two companies were retained and appointed by the Somali federal government.

The team's findings said the Monitoring Group's report was "deeply flawed and totally unreliable" and "so factually inaccurate and inexplicably biased that it likely breaches multiple investigative fact-finding standards established over 20 years ago by the United Nations General Assembly".

"As president, it was my responsibility to take seriously the allegations and to direct a thorough assessment of them," Mohamud said after the findings were released. "I am pleased that the investigative team concluded that these allegations were unfounded."

"The international community can be assured that, although there is much yet to be done, Somalia has made considerable progress towards establishing and maintaining the sound fiscal practices appropriate to a modern state," he said.
