Prior to the independence

Sky news

British intelligence services warned Somalia could lapse into anarchy and tribal warfare just months before the country gained independence, it has been revealed.

Newly released documents from the National Archives also described Somalis as "volatile and opportunist" people whose "deepest loyalty" was towards family and tribe.

The secret report prepared by the joint intelligence committee in 1960 said there was a possibility of violence in the East African country.
The report noted three key tribal groupings, the Hawiye, the Darod and the Digil-Rahanweyn.
"The posssibility should not, however, be discounted that one of the three groups might resort to violence, and that Somalia might lapse into anarchy and tribal warfare
"Although the concept of unity between all Somalis has a great emotional appeal, the deepest loyalty is towards the family and the tribe."
"Their traditional way of life is nomadic and insecure and their character consequently tends to be volatile and opportunist, quick-witted and quick tempered," noted the report on the outlook for the Horn of Africa, dated April 1960.

"Although the concept of unity between all Somalis has a great emotional appeal, the deepest loyalty is towards the family and the tribe."

Somalia became a republic in July 1960, after Britain and Italy granted independence to their two respective sectors of the country.

The report noted three key tribal groupings, the Hawiye, the Darod and the Digil-Rahanweyn.

"Any successor Government would be likely to be more nationalistic in character than the existing regime," the report noted.

"The posssibility should not, however, be discounted that one of the three groups might resort to violence, and that Somalia might lapse into anarchy and tribal warfare."

The British were spot on and they were precise and accurate First hawiye rahanweyn vs daarood. Than Rahanweyn vs Hawiye, Col yey than re established relations with digil mirifile and it was digil mirifle and darood vs Hawiye in 2006. Even though its not exactly like that but the main head groups were like that there were subclans who had sub clan interests and were in between the main groups.

Its about the somali nomadic culture, the conflict between the clan and the statehood. This document dates back two months ago before you join the rest of the nomadic crew that why they didn't mention you. They should have tell you :D

Btw rahanwan are the only clan who didn't pick arms before the mid-90s

Sahal could be true it is indeed part of the nomadic style of warfare to fight , i think they left out the Somaliland tribes , because the urban and most populated were the south. And tribal warfare in the north were easily settled by the Akils of Somaliland.

The nomadic style is the reason, such communities can't help about it without having resources like its in the gulf sheikhdoms where each big shaykh is protected by the westren interests. The case of sultan qabus getting saved by the british navy army or kuwait...besides that arab tribes being under the islamic state and were familiar with dictatorship unlike of the somali tribes.

Djibouti is important geographically(bab al mandab) the other reason is that the french were looking for a land unlike of the italians who were looking for farms or the british who were looking for workers/soldiers..the french were claiming algeria as a land and had fought for this over 130 years, they had the same attitude-though not like the algerian level- towards djibouti to keep it away under them...al haji gulled was an mp of the french parliament before the independence because he was a kinda of french overseas.

I guess they didn't mention you just because there were not yet arrangements for unity though the main political parties had this position and were willing to unite shanta.

Its because the British set up the destruction of Somalia during that time. They gave up NFD and Somali Galbeed to Kenya and Ethiopia.

I have watched a video of the somali ambassador for UN or US in the 70s ali kimiko the founder of the galmudug state showing some documents where the british were promising to unite shanta if we let them stay instead of bringing back the italians but the SYL has rejected this.

Btw a police from galmudug have arrived kenya to get training what do you think of this?

Kenya is trying to win Hawiye HG Ally, in the hope that future Hawiye HG president might be their ally!,...I have the feeling that Puntland is playing part here!
