Education minister to establish national school curriculum

Postby hydrogen » Fri Jan 24, 2014 6:43 pm

The new Somali Minister of Education Ahmed Mohamed Gurase has outlined his plans for the development of education in a country which has lacked a National Education Curriculum for over two decades.
In his first interview since being appointed to the post, the minister told HOL that his office was intending to establish a special program which is aimed at revisiting the country’s age-old national Curriculum that has been missing since the country fell into anarchy in January 1991.

“I am very happy to become Somalia’s Education Minister at the moment, and during my term of office I will work hard to establish a unified educational system for the entire country” Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Gurase told HOL during an interview in Mogadishu on Friday.

“We will implement a complete national curriculum as well as a single certificate and we will then look for international recognition for the country’s qualifications." The minister said adding that the re-launch of the governmental educational institutions such as universities and schools across the country will be one of the first things to be targeted under the national curriculum revival programs.

Mr. Gurase indicated that his ministry will open offices in entire regions of the country adding that such offices will facilitate his ministry’s educational enhancement programs across the country.

The recently appointed Somali education minister Mr. Gurase is expected to resume office on Monday next week.

Somalia hasn’t had national educational system for the past 23 years. During this period, privately-owned organizations had covered only 10% of the educational needs in the country.
