Top Al Shabab leader surrenders to Somali government

Al Shabab’s leader in the Galgala Mountains in the semiautonomous Somali region of Puntland Sheik Mohamed Said Mohamed (Atom) has voluntarily surrendered to Somali government, accusing his former group of acting against Islam.

Talking to the media at the compound of the ministry of information, the defected Islamist leader said he decided to leave Al Shabab after he understood they were not fighting in accordance with Islamic law.

“I am Sheik Mohamed Said Mohamed (Atom) and am delivering a good message to the Somali people which is that I broke with Al Shabab—for ages I have been fighting for Ahmed Abdi Godane and his Al Shabab network who have been committing big mistakes and crimes against Islam and as well as the Muslim people of Somalia” Atom said.

“Al-Shabab misguides the young people telling them that they are fighting for Islam, but that is not true, because Al Shabab themselves are against Islam and they do whatever they want” he said adding that Al Shabab leader Ahmed Godane sees himself as above the Islamic law.

He accused Al Shabab of killing the innocent Somali people including clerics, intellectuals and all those who are important for the community.

The defection of Al Shabab’s leader in the Puntland region comes a year after another top Al Shabab commander Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys surrendered to Somali government.

I wonder what effects, if any, will this reported surrender of Atom have on the often strained Mogadisho-Garowe relationship.
