Hang on, why is it called an Exclusive Economic Zone if it is not exclusive to the country?
From what I've read that's exactly what it is. The only difference between EEZ and territorial waters is that they can pass through innocently without permission whereas if you go into a country's territorial waters without permission you are invading it.
Do you have information that says differently? I'd be interested to read up on it.
Also seems like this is the international standard. When it comes to territorial waters and EEZ all countries have 12nm and 200nm respectively.
Jasmine allow me to explain this.
The Somali government ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), but did NOT give up its claim to a 200 Nautical Mile territorial sea.
200 NM of territorial sea means that no country can enter that area for any purpose what so ever, whether economic or military.
HSM wants to limit our territorial sea to 12 nm and turn the rest to an exclusive economic zone.
The difference is that before, if any country entered the 200 NM zone it was an invasion.
The trillion dollar number come from the fact that if our territorial sea is 200 nm, and after that there is another 200 nm of EEZ, we are immensely rich.
We would then own 400 nm multiplied by 2000 KM of coast
By limiting our territorial sea, he is giving up part of our territory.

What is the difference? Where is the trillion dollars figure coming from?

Risks and Dangers!
Risks are many when losing 188 nautical miles; here are few:
1) Losing our sovereign waters.
2) Losing valid legal bases to prosecute and held liable for those who have been illegally fishing from our waters for the past 24 years.
3) Losing legal bases to pursue and held liable for those who dumped our waters with toxic industrial materials.
Dangers!
1) Inviting for unnecessary disputes to our territorial sea hence leading to demarcation which could result losing big portion of our waters to neighboring coastal states(Kenya and Norway are ready for this).
2) Having no power to tell off the warships on our waters today as those waters would be recognized as international waters or an EEZ where Somalia has no sovereign authority to deny the presence and passage of these ships.
3) In case of a war in future we cannot protect our country from 12nm as this is very short distance within reach.
4) Living with diseases arising out of the already polluted waters.
This is more than trillions, this is our livelihood, our honour.

The argument that you want Somalia to have twice as much as everyone else is ridiculous imo. Let's get realistic

That makes it seem like the EEZ is applied retrospectively? Also when is it ever legal to dump toxic waste anywhere near another country?

This is sad but probably true. We'd need a navy to patrol and protect our waters but that has very little to do with the legal definition of those waters but that we are able to enforce whatever we've agreed to.
I am very conscious if not cynical about foreign interest in Somalia however we need to be realistic and measured in our response. You can't say we are losing trillions in honour that's not even a thing. Also you can't be unreasonable in your demands and expect progress.

Jasmine, you don't understand we can get to keep all of that ocean just like Peru and Chile.
They fought for over ten years at the UN to have more ocean than everyone else, and they managed to get it.
Because just like Somalia, they are on the Pacific ocean and there are no nearby countries.
They also had the world's richest fishing grounds just 300 NM off their coast, they didn't want to share it with the rest of the world.
Somalia can do the same thing, because there is no country near us in the Indian ocean.
HSM just needs to stick to his guns and not give up.

This is exactly why Somali girls are at the bottom of this world, they've got no standards, they'll settle for anything that says Salaam to them.
There's no indho-adeeg here, this is your own property, we've already got it, are we gonna give it away?

If the president wasn't Hawiye you wouldn't be saying its ok to give away our god given waters, but cuz of his clan(which doesnt even matter cuz he's the president of all Somalis) u feel the need to protect him. Come out and say it.
