This territorial dispute is turning into a small war, for many years Puntland have held Galmudug back due to tribalism, you see Puntland can continue as a federal state without Gaalkacyo or Mudug for that matter, but Galmudug is not in that position and has more to lose in this dispute. It is sort of a like a checkmate against the formation of a majority hawiyo, minority darood state.

If however Puntland manages to overpower the Galmudug forces and dominate Gaalkacyo both politically as well as controlling the city as they do the Abdullahi Yusuf airport, then this sends are strong message to Jubaland, and this is what Jubaland needs, a strong partner against Mogadishu.
