EEGA:

Barre did not need to invade, WSLF was already in control of the majority of the region
WSLF could not defeat Ethiopia without SNA aid. WSLF was an insurgency that could control the field but it was incapable of taking cities.

Barre did not need to invade, WSLF was already in control of the majority of the region. The mistake was moving large SNA units into the country when the job was almost complete. It was another era, its history and all Somalis who died will be remembered as martyrs of a great cause at-least they didn't die killing their own country men in a useless civil war.
WSLF did not even hold 1 town before the Somali military, the strongest in Africa, joined the conflict.

All the big gains such as capture of Godey (regional capital), jigjiga and many other towns came after Somalia joined the conflict.

SNA and WSLF controlled 90% of Ogaden in January 1978.

All the big gains such as capture of Godey (regional capital), jigjiga and many other towns came after Somalia joined the conflict.
The point is the Invasion of the SNA in such a public and direct display caused the conflict to steer from an indigenous "liberation' struggle to one of an invasion by a neighboring country transgressing on the sovereignty of "Ethiopia" which greatly undermined the initial narrative. In hindsight a better strategy would have been to support the gains of the WSLF and to continue to project the conflict as one between Ethiopia and WSLF, it would have taken a little longer but was very effective.
Reports of Somali participation in the conflict
became more frequent as the intensity of the conflict increased. Although the Somali
Republic had been steadily supplying and training the WSLF (a point Mogadishu had never
denied) the reports in February were the first to cite Somali units directly involved in
supporting the WSLF. From February until the full Somali invasion in July, the WSLF
guerrillas captured village after village in the Ogaden. The available information supports the
WSLF claim that not long into 1977 they had effectively wrestled 60 percent of the disputed
- 8 -
territory away from the Ethiopian government’s control (Porter 1984, 184). The Ethiopian
army had become largely confined to the garrison towns of Jijiga, Gode, Warder,
Degehabour, Kebridehar

If SNA does not help WSLF, WSLF would have been destroyed by Ethiopia. When Soviet Union began to support Ethiopia, Barre realized that he should send his army to Ogaden before Ethiopian army grew stronger.

Dont forget when SNA was forced to leave Ogaden, WSLF was crushed by Ethiopia and its allies.

I think WSLF could not win the war without SNA support.

Ogaden War was huge defeat for Somalia, but we should not forget that Barre made a terrible mistake when he trusted in Soviet Union.
