Somalia: Puntland state slams Federal Government ban on Khat

Garowe, Puntland – Puntland government issued a statement slamming Somali Federal Government decision to ban Khat planes from entering Somalia airspace, Garowe online reports.

Federal Minister of Aviation and Transportation Ali Ahmed has announced on Monday that Somali government has banned Kenya’s Khat planes from entering its airspace effective of 6th September.

The Minister affirmed that any violation to the government decision will have a serious consequence. The Minister didn’t give further information regarding the reasons behind the sudden ban of khat planes.

However, Puntland government spokesman said to local media on Monday afternoon that ”Federal Government decision to ban khat planes from entering Somali airspace doesn’t concern Puntland state,”.“Our country is Federal and each state is entitled to self governing its own affairs.” added the spokesman.

Puntland spokesman has called Khat planes to freely arrive to Puntland region and do businesses as its open for all Somali traders. This is not the first time that Puntland government challenged Somali Federal government decisions on various occasions.



This move come as Puntland President Abdiwali Mohamed Ali arrived to Mogadishu on Monday to attend the NLF conference on Somali election expected to begin on Tuesday.

Somalia is considered the largest market for Kenya’s Khat - stimulant leaf widely used across the Horn of Africa and about 16 planes carrying the Khat arrives to Somalia on a daily basis.

Aw, your spot on, the problem is $$$, I am talking into the 100 million's that's at play here, such things transcend qabiil and HAG were never qabiyaalist to begin with anyway, this is the root of all evil and division, there is also outside factors that are pouring millions to keep the two sides apart, the division is really about $$$ and business nothing personal, Gaajo is a uniting factor which we lack.

With the Khaat business what most people don't realise is that Kikuyu are not big players, they just collect tax and recently got a good windfall due to the beef between Garre/HG in Kenya, The Garre had a sizeable monopoly on the trade until they were getting dislodged by HG over the past decade, the Garre control a fleet of private planes which they had been using as a weapon to keep everyone else away from the trade.

The feud became so big that HG dealers switched over to using Kikuyu private planes (several millions paid to them daily) due to Garre double dealings of wanting 100% monopoly on the trade, the beef spilled over into Somalia, this benefited Abgaal and Majerteen as they levied ridiculous Tax's, this is what lead to the completion of OSHACO to take Puntland out of the picture completely, only Garre plane's arrive at their airports whom are taxed to oblivion, Bermuda triangle are not players in the Khaat trade from the Kenyan route.

In Mogadishu the plan of Gheedi and Jeele (given to them from Puntland) with HSM was to get them in charge of these lucrative planes (currently HG runs it, a sacad guy your probably related to), HSM naively allowed it (as a form of reconciliation), as a result the HG dealers along minorities began to use the military airport @ balidogle and refused to pay TAX's, HSM dispatched government troops (from his own clan) to the airport to enforce it, the HG contingent in lower Shabeele also part of government troops went there to counter it.

The situation was so bad there was a shoot out near the airport between government troops (both sides) and threats to close Aden Abdullah airport and the whole road that leads to it, it almost became a full blown civil war, upon this HSM backed down completely from Gheedi and Jeele's plan (given to them by Bermuda triangle) even Guled/Odawaa got involved.

This whole plot has been cooked up in Garowe, much like they convinced Barre to not let the Italian's build the port in Hobyo but Bosaaso instead using Qabiil card and scaremongering that these people will otherwise take over, this saga has been resurrected again because HSM is now looking for support from the Bermuda triangle due to the way he has check mated himself, they have given him this marching order which he is now implementing in a different flavour which will give him popular support for those that are unaware behind the double-dealings.

The latest I am hearing is that tolka is all uniting under Shariif, but I am afraid HSM has a dug a grave so deep especially in the last year or so and made so many catastrophic mistakes even sideline our traditional DIR allies for the benefit of Puntland by wrongfully giving them more seats in the upper house (no idea what he is thinking), that I doubt we will see another HAG in office and to be honest with you sxb f-king good riddance too.

This reminds me of the famous Somali saying (Intaad qaleysay annaa waa qaybinayey), unless something drastic happens in the coming few weeks CC will run away with this with D&M PM and DIR Speaker, what your seeing is exactly how C/Yusuf got elected, 10 or so HAG running and unlike previous elections money is no longer a factor with foreign backings. I have already sold off every land I had in Xamar the past few months, a far bigger humiliation beckons unless a miracle happens.

Smooth so what is the game plan for the Iljeex besides rooting for Sharif Ahmed? Why can't they unit behind 1 Iljeex candidate? Have they lost confidence to field a successful candidate?

Don't give my rer Abti magical powers! They are just a tad bit more devious and pursue their interests above Jebertism, Somalinimo or Islamnimo. They are pragmatic but sometimes their qiyaano backfires on them.

When you all were bootyclapping for Sharif Ahmed, I asked why? When you rejoiced for Hasan Sheikh in his duals with Faroole, I asked why? What did both do for the Iljeex? NothING yet these two bent over backwards to please PL with Hasan Sheik going as far to fly them weapons that ended up being used against Galmudug. Hawiye jeceel is a losing strategy ask Caydiid. If he had agreed to a political compromise with AY in 1996 his dowlad would have taken off but he let his Hawiye jeceyl and MJ paranoia influence his decisions.

Until Iljeex stop being short term thinking and unite they will be left out in the political wilderness.
