No Haile Selassie was the son of Ras Makonnen who became the governor of Harar and Ogaden after his conquest with Ras Darge (another Yejju Oromo).

Makonnen and Menelik were cousins (inaabti) because Menelik's father and Makonnen's mother were siblings.
Makonnen was Yejju Oromo.
Menelik himself married Yejju Oromo woman and his daughter married the Yejju warrior Ras Ali Mohamed/Mikael of Wollo.
Her son and grandson of Menelik was the young Iyasu or Elias that Menelik appointed as his successor but he disappeared and didn't desire to rule.
The Yejju Oromo instead appointed the young Ras Tafari Makonnen (thus crowned as Haile Selassie I).
The Arsis have their resentment towards the Ywjju because it was them that conquered Oromo landa from Kaffa, Arsi, Illubabor, Borana to Bale.
The only warrior leading Menelik forces who was not Yejju but other Oromo (most likely Tulama) was Ras Gobana Dache.
So Arsi was defeated by fellow Oromo. Menelik was set free and brought to young Finfine by fellow Oromo.
