Born in Baidoa to a colonial political officer, Dalays was truly a full Somali national, knowing both nomadic and agricultural Somali culture and she spoke and sang in both dialects of Somali; af-Maxaa tiri and af-Maay.
Her father was a head of his times and encouraged his daughter in her artistic expression. In 1951, she became the first Somali woman in history to go on Radio and sing. She paved the way for the entirety of Somali woman to the extent she has been called the "Mother of Somali Arts." She was the first woman on the national band Waaberi

Here Hassan Aden Samatar, one of our national treasures, says he heard Dalays on the Radio as a kid and was mesmerized. He decided he would go to her house and she gifted him with an expensive Kaban and gave him the opportunity that made him a success.
