This study examines the relationship between the khat chewing and liver cirrhosis among khat chewers in Somaliland. Apparently the one of the long term effects of chewing khat is hepatotoxcicity which leads to liver failure. The subjects under the study denied that they consumed alcohol, the excessive consumption of which is usually the cause of liver failure. The study attributes the adverse effects on excessive khat consumption.

This is one more reason why khat should be banned in Somalia and among Somalis across the world.

There are already more than enough reasons to ban this disgusting drug.

Interesting finding, but there is no similar published research on this subject that would support the authors evidence.

Agreed , more studies should be done to corroborate this. But even considering this as preliminary findings, it should be cause for alarm as khat consumption is growing across Somali territories and there seems to be no organised groups fighting this vice. I would have though fighting khat consumption would be a worthy jihad by groups such as the Somali ulama, instead of dwelling on petty subjects, and not paying attention to existential ones.

If those Khat addict stop chewing .

they would run back to somalia in no time .
