Turkey Exposed For Aiding Iran During Sanctions

Postby AbdiCushite » Sun Jan 28, 2018 1:43 pm

Starting in 2012, Turkey helped Iran evade biting U.S. sanctions by providing billions of dollars worth of gold in exchange for Iranian natural gas and oil. Iran would then exchange the gold for foreign cash. Halkbank processed the transactions. FDD, which helped the prosecution

Court documents related to a recent U.S. case detail the blockbuster testimony of a gold trader at the center of a multifaceted scheme involving NATO ally Turkey helping Iran Evade nuclear sanctions at a critical moment when its economy teetered.

On Jan. 3, a jury convicted the deputy general manager for international banking at Turkish state bank Halkbank of bank fraud as well as conspiracies to violate the Iran sanctions, defraud the U.S., commit bank fraud, and money-laundering.

Key testimony against the banker, Mehmet Hakan Atilla, came from 34-year-old gold trader Reza Zarrab, an Iranian with Turkish nationality who pleaded guilty to being at the center of the largest sanctions evasion scheme in modern history and who became the prosecution’s star witness.

This guy Zerrab snitched massively 😂

" Zarrab gets up [on the stand] and really takes on the persona of a Harvard business professor,” Jonathan Schanzer, a former U.S. Treasury Department official who is now the vice president of research the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD), said at a recent event about the case. “And with dry-erase boards, starts to just sketch out the entire scheme — all the different banks, the companies, the individuals.

“He’s got a flow chart. He’s got dotted lines. He’s got arrows. It’s really like the movie ‘Beautiful Mind.’ You really see this guy laying it all out there.”

Turkey and Iran were using what is known as the “golden loophole” in the U.S. sanctions regime. The loophole meant that gold could be sent to Iran as long as it wasn’t sent to the Iranian government entities — though Schanzer asserted, “I don’t believe for a second that the gold we were looking at went to individual gold traders.” Prosecutors alleged that the gold purchases “were made by or on behalf of the government of Iran,” despite assertions made by Atilla and others.

After the loophole of closed in July 2013 and the interim nuclear deal took effect in January 2014, Turkey and Iran began creating fictitious transactions — under the guise of humanitarian shipments — to unlock money from an Iranian oil escrow account held by Halkbank. Schanzer said that “according to some estimates, that could have been another $100 billion euros” for Iran that would have otherwise stayed frozen.

“What [the Turks] were basically doing was unlocking the cash that was held in those [Iranian] escrow accounts,” Schanzer said. “And they were doing that by way of paperwork that identifies humanitarian shipments.”

In return for Turkey’s cooperation, according to Zarrab’s testimony, members of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s inner circle received millions of dollars in bribes, while Erdogan benefitted from a boost to his economic pedigree before the country’s presidential elections in August 2014. (Zarrab says he personally made as much as $150 million from the scheme.)

Schanzer explained that “from Turkey’s perspective, the gold exports were identified as exports, so it helped their bottom line economic numbers — and billions of dollars is not insignificant when looking at GDP — so this was part of the scheme along with … a personal bottom line that some of these figures apparently were able to supplement significantly through the scheme.”

American prosecutors cited telephone wiretaps from 2013 that had prompted Turkish investigations into a suspected corruption scheme involving top officials in Erdogan’s government. Three top ministers resigned in the wake of the scandal, while Zarrab and Suleyman Aslan — then chief executive of a state-owned Turkish bank — were arrested. In response, Erdogan’s government shut down the investigation, released Zarrab and Aslan, and ousted many of the police officers and prosecutors involved in the investigations.

Turkey helped ISIS more than anyone. In 2014 Turkey released 180 ISIS militants for just 49 Turkish hostages in return. Turkey famously kept open borders with Syria so they can trade for cheap oil with ISIS. Nobody fought ISIS more than the Kurds , and Turkey would routinely bomb them even as they fought ISIS. Even now, Turkey is looking to do what their proxy ISIS couldn't , eliminate the Kurds.

"Email cache proves Turkish oil minister’s links to Isis oil trade, WikiLeaks claims
More than 57,000 emails reportedly from account of Minister of Oil Berat Albayrak, son-in-law of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, hacked by activist collective Redhack
" try to keep up

Two members of Zarrab’s legal team, former New York Mayor (and Trump ally) Rudolph Giuliani and former U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey visited Turkey in February 2017 to discuss the case with Erdogan. And while Turkish officials acknowledge that there is an ongoing discussion between Washington and Ankara related to gas-for-gold implications, the next moves may be up to U.S. prosecutors.

Interesting that former Trump campaign official Giuliani is buddies with the Turks, Trump and Turkey had secret deal before he became president to deport a US citizen to Turkey where be would no doubt he executed :

" Turkish officials have vehemently denied allegations that they offered to pay President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn around $15 million to forcibly extradite a Turkish cleric who has been living in the U.S. for decades.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating an alleged plot in which Flynn would be paid to send Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish preacher who has become an object of obsession for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, back to Turkey. Gulen has been living in Pennsylvania since 1999, and the Obama administration resisted requests from the Turkish government to extradite him. It's still unclear how the Trump administration will respond to the requests. "

Turkey has been plotting on it's NATO allies since 2012 (maybe before ) while secretly working with Iran and Russia. Erdogan invaded Syria because Turkey is now exposed and is seen as not an Ally to the West or middle east Arabs. Remember Erdogan said he had a "deal" with Russia to invade Syria ? Yeah Turkey and Russia have been making "deals" for quite some time now , and I wouldn't be surprised if 1 of those deals was doing everything to get Donald Trump elected President of United States. Turkey and Russia probably collaborated on weakening a NATO response to the invasion of Ukraine in 2014. Im sure Turkey was the loudest voice against getting involved in Ukraine , I wouldnt be surprised.

Iraq , Iran, Turkey, and Syria all rejected the creation of Kurdistan because they all would border it , but really we all know what Kurdistan would serve as : a base to keep keep the Iranian/Turkish aggression in check. So far Iraq and Syria have fallen to Iranian/Turkish influence. Right now Iran is in a battle for control of Yemen. Turkey wants to set up shop just across the water in Somalia. Look for the Iranian / Turkish influence to move into Libya also

Also Turkey likes to hide it's nefarious actions under the guise of "humanitarian aid", they're giving a whole lot of humanitarian aid to Somalia right now. Aid for their ally Qatars troops aka Al Shabab? Very possible. AS launched it's biggest terrorist attack ever just last year. It clear got a boost from Qatar/Turkey

If Turkey plots on it's NATO allies like this , how quickly do you think they would turn on SFG 😂 the better question is what does Turkey really want with Somalia anyway, they might not need to turn on Somalia if it's clear they were never really allies but unsuspecting prey (SFG)

If I'm the US/EU/NATO/Gulf Arabs I'm pushing hard for the creation of Kurdistan now , and taking land from Iraq and Syria to create it. The buffer zone is needed now to stop the Iranians and Turks and their Russian overlords.

I think they want regional dominance . They want Iran controlling Yemen and to get cooperation from Eritrea. They want to be able to destabilize Ethiopia through Eritrea or Somalia if need be, because Ethiopia might be against any Turkish moves in Somalia as it would threaten Ethiopia or Kenya's place as the regional leader, and also because Ethiopia and UAE are partners on the Berbera Port. Turkey also wants to get closer to Sudan because of tensions with Egypt , as Egypt backs Saudi. In fact they could back Ethiopia against Egypt over the Nile Dam issue between the two countries again Ethiopia but money talks and right now Ethiopia and UAE have millions of dollars on the line with each other on a project that ethiopia cares about because it gives them access to the sea .

This is old news. And it wasn't just Turkey.

India, South Korea, even the UAE were bypassing the sanctions by trading in mutual currencies and gold with Iran for trade.

Why do you think Obama and Kerry were so eager to get the Nuclear Deal done? It was because these type of transactions were also being done by China and Russia. The stability of the US dollar as the global reserve currency was at threat long term due to these practices.

But, Iran is going to continue to do these type of transactions even WITHOUT the international sanctions related to the nuclear program which were lifted in 2016.

This isn't old news since the guy was just convicted in court on January 3rd. Yesterday we got details from the case showing the depth so I posted here.

Also you claim India , South Korea, and UAE were bypassing Iran Sanctions and I can't find a single article that backs that up. The sanctions were are speaking of took effect in February of 2012. That's when Turkey began helping Iran. India was a partner of Iran and use to buy their oil , but complied with the Sanctions on Iran by decreasing oil purchases by over 22% from the year before , in the first year of implementation.

On India I found this : "Quite the opposite; in fact, India was one of a handful of countries that received a waiver under U.S. sanctions law. It simply has to show a "significant reduction" in Iranian oil imports in order to be in compliance with the sanctions regime, a subjective standard with no set numeric value."

I can't say India was helping Iran Evade Sanctions. Sanctions are sanctions , but it doesn't mean nobody can trade with a sanctioned country. It means there will be rules and regulations in place for anyone who does want to.

South Korea and Iran were strong trade partners until the latest sanctions of 2012 , on SK's attitude towards Iran Sanctions I found this : " However, bilateral trade in recent years has been affected by international sanctions on Iran and Seoul’s political decision to limit its economic and energy trade with Iran. Between 2008 and 2009 Korean imports from Iran plummeted 30.1 percent, while Korean exports to Iran fell 8.1 percent.[3] In 2012 Korean imports from Iran decreased by 24.8 percent from the previous year.[4] Korean import of Iranian crude oil fell from 10 percent in 2011 to five percent in 2013 after it stopped importing Iranian oil for two months in 2012 under U.S.-led sanctions.[5] After receiving a temporary waiver by the United States, South Korea continued to import Iranian oil, but at lower levels than before sanctions."

Moving on , I also don't think UAE helped Iran Evade Sanctions at all, but I gave you the benefit of doubt and research it and found this :

"US blacklists UAE firm for evading Iran oil sanctions: The Treasury Department said on Thursday it blacklisted Sambouk Shipping FZC, a United Arab Emirates based company it says is tied to Dimitris Cambis, a Greek businessman the department recently sanctioned."

And also

" A UAE court sentenced an Iranian to 10 years in prison on Wednesday, for attempting to ship a generator to his home country in breach of international sanctions.
An Iranian was sentenced to 10 years in a UAE prison, followed by deportation, for attempting to send a generator to his home country on Wednesday, a move deemed to be in breach of international sanctions against the Islamic Republic"

That's two articles where both the U.S. and UAE gov take action against private non-government people in UAE for helping Iran Evade Sanctions . I can't find a single article where the UAE gov actively helped Iran Evade Sanctions. Likewise in the case of India and South Korea they were 2 of Iran's biggest trading partners before sanctions. Everything I read online said they complied when sanctions took effect and then received waiver from U.S. to continue a certain level of trade with Iran that would be higher than what was allowed under normal sanctions.

If you can please site a source or link one that backs up any of your claims it would be appreciated.
