I think Turkey went off the deep end because they were eventually going to be sanctioned by the US for this anyway:

Mike Flynn, a retired US General, was working in the Trump campaign as he ran for President. During this time Mr. Flynn was acting as intermediate between foreign governments and Trump. Being Pro-Russian will never be accepted in America , but being Pro-Turkish wasn't bad before Erdogan took off his mask and revealed the dictator hes always wanted to be.

The deal between Flynn and Turkey, who became Trump's head of Nation's Security Agency, was that Flynn and Trump would have the cleric Fetullah Güllen kidnapped and sent to Turkey where he would be killed. Turkey paid Flynn (and Trump?) Millions for this but it never happened because Güllen is an American citizen and the plot got exposed before any of the dirty players could try.

Turkey was no doubt going to be punished for this anyway, that's why they are doing solo military operations in Syria against NATO/EU wishes and why they are arresting and imprisoning American and European citizens under false charges. Erdogan was always going to be targeted for his failed attempt at kidnapping a US citizen, now he acts without regard because he was always going to be isolated anyway.
