Ethiopia to take stake in Port of Djibouti, its trade gateway .

Postby formidable » Wed May 02, 2018 2:26 pm

Ethiopia will take a stake in the Port of Djibouti, its main gateway for trade, under a deal reached between the two countries, state media outlets said on Tuesday.

Djibouti had been seeking investors for its port since it terminated Dubai's state-owned DP World's concession to run the port two months ago, citing a failure to resolve a six-year contractual dispute.

The port is a key asset for Djibouti, a tiny state along the Red Sea whose location is of strategic value to countries such as the United States, China, Japan and former colonial power France, all of whom have military bases there.

The size of Addis Ababa's stake was unclear.

State-owned Ethiopian News Agency said the agreement, reached at the weekend during a visit by Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Djibouti, involved the joint development of facilities. In return, Djibouti would have the option of taking stakes in state-owned Ethiopian firms.

"A joint committee of ministers would meet to thrash out details," Ethiopian New Agency said.

The government had previously said that the port would remain "in the hands of our country" until it found new investors.

Djibouti handles roughly 95 percent of all inbound trade for landlocked Ethiopia, Africa's second most-populous nation and an economic power in East Africa.

The deal with Djibouti follows Ethiopia's agreement to acquire a 19 percent stake in the Port of Berbera in the breakaway Somali region of Somaliland. DP World retains a 51 percent stake there, while the government holds the rest.

You see this kind of deal is idiotic, if Djibouti handles 100% of the inbound trade they still don't need to give Ethiopia a stake in their port, this is called giving up your strategic value, this deal is a sign of a race to the bottom which SL has initiated, if we follow the mentality of SL and indeed PL we as a Somali people regardless if you from Somalia or from the city state Djibouti, it will be our undoing, fuck this weak mentality, Ethiopia pay to get imports, if Siad Barre was alive, this decision would instigate a war with Djibouti walahi.

Hmm something fishy about this
I think the whole scenario of dp world and somaliland was just a way to get rid of dp world from djibouti so djibouti could get a hold of the port and share a stake with Ethiopia, djibouti port will and has always been more important to ethiopia than berbera port which is part of somalia and somaliland not being an independent state.

We Somalilanders invested in the abay dam. I like this healthy competition between somaliland and Djibouti. Djibouti has so many foreign troops mashallah. We have The emirate military base in berbera.. the hawiyes have the turks. And The daroods are slaves if tigre and gallas I love it. The darods are rotting in jail ogaden

The inter somali dynamics is so that in short time we can use for free every somali port.
Workineh (the foreign minister) will inshaAllah go to Puntland and they will make their proposition!
Economic integration they say!

Advo it's good djibouti is protecting its interest it's port interest they know their monopoly is fine Ethiopia will have one of the biggest economies in the future population's is over 110 million. Djbouti ate good from 2002 to now. They gonna get the whole cut. But Ethiopians want to diversify their port use. The late meles.zenawi got even lamu project rolling in Kenya along with south Sudan . Berbera is very close to Ethiopia we spoke with meles about this project before I died and he was on board. The Ethiopian are our cloaest allies in the region. As for Djibouti ' it's our little brorthe half of the habarawal businessmen have djibouian bank accounts. I was in djibouti almost 4 month's the place is booming mashallah wey inoo sii siraadnaysa. By the way we might bring Russians to zeila soon

If it wasn't tragically serious, this cagdheer would be good at stand up comedy.

How can you Cagdheer ever compete with Iidoors. Even during Afweynes reign, he kept you away from anything that involved arithmetic. The iidoors on the other hand made up the merchant classes, even with the whole state apparatus against us. Do you think after being sodomised in Habashi dungeons, you've all of a sudden developed remarkable new talents.

Doqonki Ogaden, learn the difference between reality and dreams. The only thing you be doing Berbera is following your Habashi masters about, chained and in all fours.
