Oil-Rich Somali Region Set to Elect New President

Postby ReturnOfMariixmaan » Mon Jan 07, 2019 3:46 pm

Lawmakers will elect a new president Tuesday in the semi-autonomous Somali region of Puntland, which is battling factions of al-Qaeda and Islamic State.

More than 20 candidates are taking part in the vote, including Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, 53, who has ruled the Horn of Africa region since 2014. Ali is seeking a second term and has pledged to develop infrastructure, improve security and the management of public finances.

Situated on the Gulf of Aden near the entrance to the Red Sea, Puntland became semi-autonomous in 1998 and had escaped the worst of Somalia’s civil war. It’s now tackling an insurgency by al-Shabaab, the al-Qaeda-linked group that’s inflicted mass casualties in southern Somalia, as well as a breakaway faction that swore allegiance to Islamic State and has been targeted by U.S. airstrikes.

Ali’s main rivals in the contest include Said Abdullahi Deni, a former minister of planning in Somalia, General Said Mohamed Hersi, a former head of Puntland’s army who has commanded the offensive against Islamist militants, and Ali Isse Abdi, an economist with a background in accounting and finance.

Puntland has oil concessions that have been awarded to companies including DNO International ASA of Norway, Vancouver-based Africa Energy Corp. and RAK Gas LLC of the United Arab Emirates.

I can sense your jealousy. I have two federal states as an laandheere. You only have one. The two richest ones by the way. Somaliland will return. Listen to Khadar Hussein of Waddani, he's the only one talking sense.

Petroleum has announced that results of a Drill Stem Test at the Shabeel North well in Puntland have come back negative. (Image source: Range Resources)

An open-hole Drill Stem Test (DST) was conducted in the upper portion of the well’s primary Jesomma Foundation over a 50 metre gross range, at a depth of 1,910-1,960 metres, following positive oil shows.

The test results, however, revealed only fresh water with no trace of oil.

With a 60 per cent working interest, Canadian oil and gas company Horn Petroleum controls the Dharoor and Nugaal Valley Production Sharing Agreements, with the remaining 40 per cent split equally between oil firms Range Resources and Red Emperor.

The partnering oil companies intend to follow their original plan and continue drilling to an approximate depth of 2,400 metres in order to penetrate the remaining section of Jesomma sands. Electrical logging will then be utilised to determine whether further testing would be justified.
No trace of oil in punani land and don't even try claim kenya waters near the border. :Heh:

There is no oil anywhere in Puntland. This has already been proven.
