It was the poor and the middle class among the Darod who suffered in 1991 and were killed, the elite rich business people/Those with deep connections with the state, packed their baggage several months before the USC entered Mogadishu, others did after 1988, they knew that the country was heading to hell and Mogadishu was going to turn into a blood bath. They moved their money abroad, they couldn't care less that their villas were looted, when they had millions of dollars in foreign banks. Most of them moved to the UAE and Egypt where they are still living to this day in the posh neighborhoods, but in the beginning they were buying homes in Nairobi and Kenyan citizenship on the spot. You will meet their kids today in Elite Indian universities and they have enjoyed a wonderful time since the war with the best things money can buy. It's a myth that the " Elite lost in 1991 " they didn't see a single day of the war. Other people could also see where the country was heading they just didn't have the funds to leave the country.....
