Jubba river water levels DOWN 50%, since Ethiopia's new dam, on Farmaajo's watch

Postby Futurist » Wed Feb 19, 2020 9:00 am

But of course Farmaajo's so called federal government stays silent

Instead southerners obsess over Somaliland, like there is no tomorrow

Nabar & Naxdin will bring permanent famine, drought and hunger to South Somalia

Little do they know what is coming!

The Jubba river is no longer a permanent river, since Ethiopia's dam with Farmaajo's blessing

It is now officially a "wadi" or "seasonal river"

For 3 months of the year, it is now completely dry

This will only get worse as Ethiopia builds more dams

But the South continues to be obsessed with Somaliland. Talk about misplaced priorities!

The government needs to have an agreement with Ethiopia & the Somali region of the amount of water to hold back, Those damns could also be beneficial to Somalia as they will stop flooding. And they benefit our Somali people in the the Western Regions.(Dowlad Deeganka Somaliyeed)

The agricultural output of these towns and cities will be devestated. They will become desert towns in 10 years time

Ethiopia is building 20 dams on the Somali rivers

First of all the USA has made it clear Ethiopia can do what it likes as far as its concerned. There will be no internaitonal pressure on Ethiopia. Sec Pompeo made that clear.

Secondly, with USA's blessing Ethiopia has indicated it will not sign any agreements with downstream countries, because it's not in its own interests. They will just pretend to negotiate, while continuing to build dams regardless.

Finally, the benefit of flood management (once in 10 year event) is way over stated. The effects of multiple dams on the Jubba, Shabelle and Dawa rivers inside Ethiopia, will without question be overwhelmingly negative, devastating even, for South Somalia.

Partly because the effect of reduced water flow, as there will be little to no water flowing in the Shabelle and Jubba rivers during the drier months, which will be devestating for South-Central Somalia. The loss of agricultural output in these months will far exceed any benefits from flood management. Partly because the demand for water in Ethiopia will increase exponentially in future years as they plan to use the water IN FULL for irrigating industrial scale plantations (sugar, cotton, soy etc). Leaving no water to release to downstream countries like Somalia.

But also because building dams stops the natural process whereby fertile soil is washed down to South Somalia from the Somali Region of Ethiopia. Which used to fertilise the land naturally, meaning that fertility of South Somalia will decrease and land will become more sterile and less productive. Flooding of rivers is a natural part of water basin systems. People plant on the flood plains and then get agricultural products growing from there when the water recedes. If you dam the water, you lose this.

Watch my words: if the dam building continues at this rate, there will be famine in South Somalia on a regular basis in future decades. This is an existential threat to South Somalia. But instead of Farmaajo's so-called 'federal government' addressing this existential national securrity crises, they foolishly obsess over Somaliland because of their cuqdad against us, instead of their real enemy. Karma is a bitch

All the Nabar & Naxdin groupies (who support Farmaajo's failed so-called Federal Government because of qabiil reasons alone) are silent as usual

For once, they have nothing to say.

That's the fake unionist qabilists of Nabar & Naxdin for you. Watch my words, they will bring devestation to South Somalia just as Siad Barre brought devestation before!

Somalis build right on the flood zone’s, So stopping the floods is a benefit, just look at all the towns on the river. I know it stops the natural process of soil fertility, we can figure out later maybe there is other techniques we can use to fertilize the soil naturally.

We cannot stop Ethiopia now if Egypt couldn’t stop it. We can only negotiate plus we have the Somali region on our side & a new administration in Addis. I don’t believe they would want to damage Somalia’s agriculture, they & the UN & other IC community organizations & countries, just need to be shown the damage their dams are doing.

You have presented literally nothing.

The only thing I see is some "he said" from GuledWiliq who literally does nothing except "Twitter rage" about Farmaajo all day and some anecdotal stuff by HarunMaruf who as usual seems to be confused about everything when not directly reporting the news.

Do you have something like an apolitical environmental impact study?

That twitter user above is just your run off the mill Hutu lost in limbo in twitter clout world.

Nabar naxdiin isn’t really responsible for this. The occupants of Somali region are responsible.

I may be wrong but doesn't that graph suggest the waters are down 50% from last years peak which was high compared to the 50 year average. In fact when this was last measured it looks the waters were at around the same level as the 50 year average.

I can't speak for the legitimacy or accuracy of the data provided, but by going off of that figure you're absolutely correct. According to the initial graph it shows the river was on par with the average level it was supposed to be at, but was low compared to 2018's historic highs However, this graph doesn't account for October-December which saw the heaviest Deyr rains of the last 30 years which raised the rivers of both the Jubba and Shabelle to above river bank levels which was exponentially higher than river levels at any point in 2018. Anyways to make a long story short, I can speak for the Jubba river in particular since it's the largest freshwater body in Somalia by a long shot and say the river levels as of now are above average and will likely continue to remain that way as we enter into the Gu rain season shortly. This hysteria about any dams is purely aimed at scoring cheap political points with poorly analyzed figures and not based on the reality on the ground.

Having said that, the southern regions have always received a very large amount of rainfall compared to other regions in Somalia and also have a lot of river water run off. Our underground aquifers are repeatedly recharged and largely unexploited. We are in a very good place in terms of fresh drinking water potential.
