Efforts to contain the recurring floods have completely failed, thanks to corruption. In the past few weeks, there were photo-op meetings at the river showcasing efforts to contain the floods by a few engineers, gudoomiyaha gobolka & others. Placing sand/mud along part of the river's banks, constructing a few meters of low wall with low-grade cement, etc is all they were able to do. The much fanfare $6 million donated by Italy & earmarked for doing something about the floods has already been pocketed.

According to some of the locals interviewed in the video, there's the possibility that Beledweyne is completely abandoned. They have now to contend with water borne diseases, hunger, lack of shelter, etc, in an era of Covid-19, recession and limited income. They have called for the intervention of the FG.

What can be done to help the locals?

Sxb, this isn't about 'my dusty village is less dustier than yours.' The future of Beledweyne and its people is at stake. The truth is, Hirshabelle administration miserably failed the people it represents. Already, there are 3-4 floods just this year, not mentioning the years before. The gu' season is on the horizon, and one can only hope for better outcome.

You've claimed only a 'portion of the populace evacuated', but the following videos of a long line of trucks, cars, gaari dameers, bajaajs, etc contradict your claim:


It's beyond the expertise & resources of Xaaji Dhagaxoow and the few engineers with him to do something effective against the floods. Instead of industrial/military grade cement, they've used plain cement that wouldn't hold much. Some of those interviewed in the video, like you, have praised the efforts of the Xaaji and engineers, but unlike you, those interviewed told the truth that the efforts haven't borne tangible results.

Already, parts of the city submerged for months are unlivable & abandoned. With the likelihood (hopefully not) of more floods, the locals are gonna be forced to give up. Hence my previous question; What can be done to help the locals?

I've given you the facts on the ground. Yes, a portion of the mentioned evacuees is portrayed in that footage. Flooding was mitigated tremendously saving property and possibly lives. The fact that the catchment zones which Xaaji Dhagaxoow and the committee swiftly consructed as soon as the funds were belatedly released by the federal gov is a testament to genuine effort and accomplishment.

If you would like to believe otherwise for whatever reason, go for it.
