The problem of Somalia over the last three decades can be summed up as proxy heads of state being installed by a multitude of western nations that hold strategic, economic and security interests in the area. Beyond the theatrical drama of Somali politics, all of these characters, HSM, Farmajo etc since the days of Abdullahi Yusuf and Geedi they are all marionettes.
The people of Somalia, diaspora and domestic are then distracted by this reality by the constant appeal to symbolic icons that represent to some, a bygone era of greatness for all Somalis.
During the duration of the supposed period of greatness for the people of Somalia, 1960-1991, we have now lapsed a time frame equal to that, 1991-2021, therefore it is clear any attempt at formulating a national identity based on the residual symbols of a one-man dictatorship ran in the distant past...will always end in failure, as time as shown again.
It is unfortunate, but its reality. The sooner the people of Somalia realises whose pulling the strings attached to these marionettes, the sooner they move towards true change.
