French colony to give ethiopia a naval base

Postby mahoka » Fri Jun 25, 2021 4:31 am

France has given Ethiopia the go ahead to build a military base in the Red Sea on france’s jibouti colony.

This comes after France and Ethiopia signed a military cooperation deal in 2019 to develop Ethiopia’s navy even though Ethiopia is a landlocked country

This is strategic move by Djibouti........by granting Ethiopia a naval base they have secured the future of their port.

The question one should be asking is where does that leave Berbera port?

Berbera port's viability is the Ethiopian trade......no doubt it will see some Ethiopian traffic as the Ethiopians are joint owners of the port.

Berbera still has a bright future if it positions itself as the premiere port on the Somali peninsula.

I've always said Berbera should be a free port to be used by Somali traders from all over East Africa.

It's biggest problem is riad and rail connections to the wider region.
