This is totally different not the cold war period, when it made sense for a rival superpower to have military bases near strategic locations. Russia gains nothing from a base in WG, and unlike areas near Bab el Mandeb, Berbera isn't a strategic location.

I doubt it very much they will do evething to further their super power interest. They fought and annexed crimea against the will of Ukraine a much more important country then wartorn Somalia. They recognised akbazia and South osetheia despite the Western protest and Georgia.

Those regions are literally on Russia's borders and are vital to the defence of their homeland.

Berbera, however strategic, is not an existential issue for the Russians so I don't expect them to flout international law.

OK and Russia I suspect will be neutral on the issue of Somaliland independence, as long as SL officials reach out to Moscow to explain the reality on the ground. Russia I expect will be far more open to Somaliland then they would ever be towards Kosovo as they are staunchly against Kosovo being recognised as separate from Serbia
