That area in the first picture looks nice man. I think all of Gedo is very green, even the dry northern parts but people are making it a dessert by cutting the trees.

ps. are there wild animals in gedo like lions, elephants etc?, I know this one kid in my school who shot a wild pig at his fathers farm, when it attacked him.

Wallahi my mom says the same shit. Gedo duur geedo badan ayay aheed. Not anymore though. Meesha meel habaaran ayay noqote hada. Abaar after abaar. Dhiiga muslimka lagu daadshe weeyo malaha. Iyo Geedaha la jaraya.

According to the many archived articles I have read, Gedo like most other Somali region has always had recurrent drought and irregular seasonal rainfall.
The only gree in Gedo is where the Jubba river runs, the rest 90% of the region is no greener then Galgaduud or Mudug. It is a product of its geographical zone including southeastern Ethiopia and parts of NFD.

Qansa,
Same stories I hear from My Parents, that rainfall was plentiful and abaar was never heard of thats why they get suprised when they hear about all this abaar in Gedo. Meesha Barwaaqo ayee ahayd and they would experience a full rainy season. I really think as You said the place became cursed due to some evil that was committed most probably violence and Jaahiliyyah.

Murax, were your parents born in Gedo? During qaxii I lived in this place called Gedoondhawe just outside of Khadiijo Xaaji (another town) and it had a bohol that went through the town. Plenty of water everywhere and it was very green although very hot too. But it had nice soil. The type that if you rolled around in your clothes wouldn't pick up any dirt. Some parts Gedo are definitely dry and mountainous but abaaraha hada dhaco waa something new.
I assume since less people lived in the cities back in the days, the demand for firewood was significantly smaller. And because of this not as much trees were being cut down. Also because of the war and lack of governments to provide jobs to people, a lot of people are trying to make living from selling firewood. Mansha allah this year it rained a lot and the people had nothing to complain about. I want to visit this place called Farburaay near Bardhere where all my reer adeer live.

Murax, this is Luuq area in 1983.

It is typical Somali geographical (savannah/semi-arid) landscape...the same way it is now. The problem with parent's "recollections" is that sometimes it is riddled with emotion and sentimentality which can distort the viewpoint to
how the parent would have like the place to be. In this case that would the polar opposite of anything in Somalia today...so since we are at war, they would like their memory to be of peace, if there is hunger they would like it to be of times of good harvest, etc.
This is why it is better to analyze the psychology of the individual and the psychological aspects of whatever is being discussed. Sometimes the truth lies in that analyzes then the actual things said.

My father spent some time in Gedo in the early 80s (for work purposes) & he said, for the most part, it wasn't "green".
