UK Parliament petition to recognise Somaliland

Postby Landon » Mon Aug 29, 2016 6:58 pm

Anyone else noticed some petition going through the British Parliament made by Stephen Doughty MP?

"Conduct independent review of recognition of Somaliland as independent country

We congratulate the people of Somaliland as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of reclaiming their independence; recognise the strong historical ties between Somaliland and UK; welcome the strong cooperation between UK Government and Somaliland through development aid, trade and security assistance"

It has about 2000 supporters, but needs 10,000 for the government to respond, and 100,000 for the government to debate it, but closing period is 23rd of November. I thought it would be good if the Parliament responded to this to get more news out about Somaliland. :sland:

The only way Somaliland is going to get recognition is through Mogadishu government, UK parliament debate wont change other world powers view especially US, Italy, china, Russia(annexed parts of Ukraine, Georgia). plus it has implications for other aspirant countries suppressed by there current unions. HSM or any future Somali pres holds key.

But the UK is the leader of the Commonwealth of Nations, which many other African countries are a member of, and which Somaliland has legitimacy to join. What's most important is for the African Union to recognise Somaliland, and the UKs recognition could help push the African Commonwealth members to give it a second thought.

It's worth a try at least. Better than every single world government turning a blind eye to this matter.
