Tsunami left Hobyo city and its beach contaminated

"The impact of the tsunami stirred up hazardous waste deposits on beaches around North
Hobyo and Warsheik, south of Benadir. Contamination from the waste deposits has thus
caused health and environmental problems to the surrounding local fishing communities," says
the report.
Many people in Somalia's impacted areas are complaining of unusual health problems including
acute respiratory infections, mouth bleeds and skin conditions.
Water Supplies, Sanitation and Soil Fertility
In many of the affected areas groundwaters, bore holes and aquifers have been contaminated
by salt water and bacteria as a result of sea water infiltration and damage to toilets, septic tanks
and other sanitation systems.

Aboowe, unfortunately the problem is even deeper then that. A while ago, I was reading a report along the same lines as what you describe. It showed that since the early 1980s, Somalia's coastline has been used as dumping ground for such waste produced by other countries. I thinks these countries are from Europe. And after the civil war, the warlords became to police these shore and make deals with other countries to dump their wastes such as uranium, heavy metals like cadmium and mercury, which can be lethel to the human body and other radioactive materials. This is happening everyday to our shores, and since noone is policing it, these dumps are not only illegal but definitly enivornmentally hazarous. One of the misterious disease that came out of this is what somalis call now "Kaduudiyow" hence the name, the person literaly becomes paralyzed either waist up or down or sometimes both. Even my aunt got it on her visit and doctor in US couldn't figure it out.
This needs a definite international attention, but we don't have any evironmental activities to speak out against this.

That will be great. I don't know the deal with the communities in US, but it seems like you guys in london have meetings in which you talk about issues that concerns the sacads. Unlike in the US.
