What Does It Mean To Be An AMERICAN Citizen?

Hello folks

now that I have been an American citizen for a while, ask the question -what does it mean to be an american citizen? this question needs alot of research and thinking. but then if I just talk about my exprience --being an american citizen mean
that you can vote,
that you can travel any where with a passport
that you can run for an office
and that you have freedom of speech and religion (which I doubt) because alot of muslems have been arrested for practicing this rights.

so to me, being an American citizen doesn't graunteed you that much privileges, or rights --it depends who you are and what your color and religion is. no matter how long you have been a citizen--you can't run for a president which I wanted .
so what does it mean to be an American citizen for you--?
