I hope everyone is doing well. I am in my early twenties and have been thinking about the future of the Somali language and the culture more broadly. I am scared of what the future will look like for our kids and their kids. Though I am hopeful for a continuation of the daakan, there is no guarantee nor any effort towards that path. I think it is important that we create institutions and invest in them to make sure that our culture doesn't die out, not just in America, but back home as well. As Somalis in the diaspora return they will bring with them a variety of languages and as the influence and power of the U.S continue, English will dominate conversations.
I don't know maybe I am over reacting but I think as a people we haven't really mapped out the future for ourselves. We don't see how our lives might be different in 30-40 years, iA. Though Somalia might rebuild and we can all return home one day, we aren't guaranteed that.
