A 19-year-old St. Paul College student who emigrated from Somalia to Minnesota seven years ago was fatally shot early Monday near the St. Paul-Minneapolis border.
St. Paul police didn't immediately identify the victim, but family and community members said that his name was Shafici Ahmed and that he had been attending the St. Paul technical school.

"He was a nice guy, very honest, intelligent, friendly and sociable," said Dek Nur, 27, the victim's half-brother. "There is nothing I can do about losing my brother, but we'd like to find the person responsible and bring him to justice."

Police responded to a report of gunfire at the intersection of Berry Street and University Avenue W. about 3 a.m., said Sgt. Cory Tell, a St. Paul police spokesman. Officers found the man lying on a sidewalk; he had been shot multiple times, Tell said.
Ahmed's half brother, Dek Nor, said family members know little about the circumstances surrounding the shooting outside the KSTP-TV station at University Avenue and Berry Street in St. Paul.

Police responded to a 3 a.m. call about shots fired on Berry, just north of University. Officers found a man lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead by St. Paul Fire Department paramedics.

Police believe the shooting wasn't random and are looking into several leads. No suspects were in custody Monday evening.

KSTP reported that a station employee who was arriving at work heard six gunshots and saw two young men walking away from the scene.

The witness said the two men drove away in a white van.

A native of Somalia, Ahmed had moved to the United States from an African refugee camp in 1999, graduated from Edison High School in Northeast Minneapolis and had been attending St. Paul College, said Nor, who was at St. Paul Police Department headquarters Monday afternoon.

Nor saw Ahmed on Sunday afternoon. Nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary.

"He is a good man," Nor said.

The Prospect Park town house where Ahmed lived with his family in Minneapolis is less than a mile from where he was shot in St. Paul. A stream of Somali community members waited their turns in 90-degree temperatures to pay their respects to his family Monday afternoon.

Omar Jamal, executive director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center in St. Paul, said many in the Somali community are alarmed by youth crime, the high school dropout rate and a disconnect between elders and the younger generation.

"The community is getting a rude awakening," he said.

To address such concerns, Jamal said he has organized a community forum from 2 to 6 p.m. June 7 at the Hamline University Law School.

Anyone with information about Ahmed's shooting death is asked to call St. Paul police at 651-291-1111.
