The Cumar Maxamud family you have mentioned must be Starcream's family.Grant wrote: Those I knew were Hawiye, Barwaani and Cumar Mahamoud.
There were still some Italians in the area, a doctor and some nuns associated with the Leprosarium across the river.
were they working for the government? or just residing there
Thanks for the pics; they afford us glimses of the country we had

Nice Pics Grant. Any chance of you going back to Somalia( not South), might be Somaliland or Puntland and finish rest of your days with Camel milk and goat meat?
BTW, Bantu are not authentic Somalis, they are Somali national just like Reer Hamar and the likes. Bantus came from Zimbabwe and Uganda

Bantus are not ethnically Somali. They are Somali by nationality. Laakin I agree that it is totally wrong to discriminate against them.
I am not sure if they are recent arrivals or if they were there before the ethnic Somalis came. I know my grandmother's family owned jareer slaves in middle shabelle, may Allah forgive them. I think the bantus were most likely there and ended up being enslaved by the Somalis who were expanding into new frontiers. It doesn't make sense that they were all brought over by foreign slave traders especially those who don't live in the costal areas.

Sadly, no. We were told that taking photos would be seen as offensive in many quarters and generally refrained.Cartan Boss wrote:Grant do u have any images of Talex region?
I have a booklet of photos and translations of Somali poetry that was privately published in Kenya in 1969. I do not believe it has been publicly available. The photos are of Somalia generally, some from the North, nothing specific to Tallex. I believe Screw intends to publish it on the new website next month. Best I can do.

Starscream,
I don't think many PC people got to Eyl as it is off the beaten track and there wasn't a school there. I was there for two or three days, but did not have a camera at the time.
Beautiful place. I have especially fond memories of a small cave-ledge above the beach and watching a troop of baboons play on the cliff face.
There is an enormous amount of water that flows over that cliff and out to sea. It's the full drainage from the Nugaal valley, isn't it? I suppose I was not the only idiot gaal who thought that water should be saved and used for agricultural purposes. There were about a dozen European-style plows someone had brought and abandoned at the top of the cliff.

Your conjectures are offensive.
I was there as the guest of the Somali Government, representing the Peace Corps and the highest ideals of the Kennedy Administration. I believe we all acted accordingly. I know I tried to. The half-Italian girl was a married woman. Somali women were not running to jump in my bed.
On those rare occasions I had sex, it was paid for; usually arranged by a government official (yes!), or a friend. I can't say I am proud of any of it; sex outside marriage is not part of my religious heritage, either.
