Yarrow Mahmout......Somali slave in America?

Yarrow Mamout was born in Africa around 1736 and was a teenager when enslaved and brought to America, apparently no later than 1752. His African homeland and ethnicity are unknown, and although he was brought to the Virginia-Maryland area, little is known about his early years in America. He ultimately lived in Washington D.C. and during his old age was well known in the Georgetown area, where he was manumitted from slavery in 1797. He was known as a devout Muslim and hard worker, and was able to accumulate some property. He lived the rest of his life in Georgetown, where he died in 1823 at the age of about 88.
Now this is what leads me to think he might be Somali.....

1) The guy in the picture doesn't look like your average West African. Remember this guy was brought from Africa so there is no admixture in his ancestry. He has a long slim nose, high cheek bones, his hair isn't that nappy, and his skin color is brown. Most slaves from West Africa look nothing like that. The guy is DEFINITELY East African in origin.

2) He is a devout Muslim. This eliminates the chance he's Habesha or Oromo (mostly).

3) And most important of all his NAME...........Yarrow is a Somali name

BTW this was inspired by the "somali slaves in Saudi Arabia" thread

The people from Zanzibar Islands are mixed with Oman Arabs. Their Sultan I believe dealt with slave trade.

It's like you people are hoping that the slavs brought to America were Somalis so you could connect with African Americans are your descendants or something.

Most Slaves were brought from West Africa. Not hating but this is fact. Logistically it did not benefit any American slave ships to go to somalia and travel all the way to North Carlina were many slaves were docked off.

some estimates say there was 10-30 percent muslims brought over.
These are west african Fulanis 100% muslim who did most of the enslaving and sent the pagan africans packing although they were also enslaved when they were caught off gaurd.

also groups like the taureg, Hausa, etc are all muslim and have such features.

Our of the millions and millions of peoples in Africa, this guy concluded that man is Somali origin because he doesn't look full bantu and because of his religion and name.

I guess the singer Sade must be Marehan.

A quick google search reveals the man is what I first thought he must be after reading Real Talk's post and that is a Fulani.
James H. Johnston has thoroughly researched and published on Yarrow Mamout,
“The Man in the Knit Cap” painted by Charles Willson Peale in 1819 and James
Simpson in 1822. A talented and famous African of Fulani heritage, literate in
Arabic, he was father-in-law to an African American woman, Polly Yarrow (husband
Aquilla) for whom Yarrowsburg, in Washington County, Maryland, is named

http://www.alliesforfreedom.org/African ... _Page.html
In 1796 Brooke Beall’s inventory listed Yarrow’s age at about 60 years old. Yarrow (Mamout) Marmood 1736-1844 was enslaved and brought from Guinea, Africa before the Revolutionary War.
