There is no city outside of Addis Ababa that is bigger than Bosaso today.

Bahir Dar, Mekelle, Jijiga, Nazret, Dire Dawa, all of them are under 200,000. They put 70% of the national budget in Addis Ababa just so they can host conferences for their neighbors.

In 20 years, Somalia will be the most spread-out and best built country in Africa, we will have 20 cities above 200,000 soon, all growing at the same time. That's the biggest benefit of the civil war.

2020 looks bright, it would be interesting to compare Bosaso, Hargaisa and Kismaayo.

I guess 90% of their population must be rural maybe even more, that's the only reasonable answer. However what I'm suprised is that jigjiga and dire dawa are cities that somalis invested heavily in and their populations do not exceed 200k when I can think of a handful that exceed that it SL and PL, why is that?

Its not just Ethiopia, most African countries are like that. Only a few countries have cities outside the capital that are big. Kenya is truly among the worst, outside of Nairobi and Mombasa, the rest of the country is in the stone age. Even in Djibouti, Qardho is bigger than Carta, Cali Sabeex and other Djibouti "cities."

Most of these dictators' power revolves around the capital, they don't build other cities because opposition tribes and rebels might benefit from those faraway cities outside of government control.

Anyway, Somalia would be the same if we continued the old system. I prefer the federal/tribal zones we have today, let every man work for his people in case the day comes when a war forces us from the capital back to our tribal settlements.

^Exactly same way xamar was the only real city somalia had, I would say before 91 xamar was like close to 1.5million will places like hargeisa were close to 150k-180k and bosaso was probably 100k.

Waar djibouti is a one city country, the rest are all villages and even then the city isn't large like addis or mogadishu.

Emperior, bosaso always existed even in the colonial period it was refered to as bender kasim, but it was a village not a city or a town compared today.

paid, i agree dictators and neo-colonised african countries are useless for a country's thorough development, but during the 70s and 80s it was personal decision that made Xamar so superp and rich without much foreign investment. the government actually made huge shocking developments that other african countries rarelly saw, which includes several port contructions, oil refineries, nationwide road, etc Xamar was great and SYL did improve it but it really became a internationally appreciated city during the 80s.

do you think you will ever see government in Somalia that will let personally business sums of hard currency to improve the Non-foreign Business structure ? i dont think so. we need to adopt good parts of our history.

Hargeisa was like 50,000 before the civil war and Xamar was only half million. Bosaso was less than 10,000, Garowe was like 1,000 maybe.

Since the civil war, everyone in the countryside started moving to cities, that's why even Xamar has a bigger population. Back then Somalia had one power center, now every sub-sub-sub-clan has their own power center.
