the names of some Somali Cities,do you know what they mean?

Postby Garaad_LQ » Thu Nov 11, 2010 12:48 am

like Hargeisa , some old dude told me it means little-Harer in hareri ,and the first guy who settle the city place was Somali guy from Harer (i'm not sure about this story though ) ,it more sounds like har or hadh and gaysa = shadow-giver something like that

Muqdisho , it could be from a the Arabic maqcad مقعد and the Persian shah = the seat of the shah((king) ,i think it has something to do with the Sherazis who ruled Muqadisho in middle ages

so Harari people populated Hargeisa and Oromo Galla lived in Galkacyo!

Add berbera to list = Berbers, those northern Africans who look like Somalis.

A UN report on Kismayo region history says Oromo populated Kismayo way before Somalis arrived. They were wiped out by some disease. Maybe tracing back these names will give us some idea of our history.

Somali = oral sociery = no written history.

Berbera = The land of Berber

Somali people were know as Berber by Arabs, if you look at historical texts

Muqdisho, this is what my sister told me

Muq = Apperance Disho = makes worse

Living in that places makes you darker or uglier, hecne Muqdisho

Makes sense really

Kismayo----------------------------------sawaahili word whichs kisi=dhaw ama wax dhaw, MAAYO=biyo, kisimaayo=biyo-dhaw.

Galkacayo-------------------------------- galla=oromo and kacyo=laga eryadey word gaaal is from galla which oromos, so ancians somalis when islam come to somalis there were no word for infidal kufaar, so they translated word kuffar, if you are not muslim then your( GAAALLA) so somalis hates most to be called (gaalla) oromos therefore people stayed been muslims, therefore word (gaaal) is from GALLA whichs oromo.

gaalkacyo was OROMO LAND and somalis come and take the land of gaallas and they called the place(GAAL+KACYO) dhulkii laga eryadey oromada(galla)

Boosaaso ------------------- formar bendar qasim, i think BOOSAASO, COME FROM basaaaso= meel saxaro ah
mogadishu-----------------------actually mogadishu is a persian name whichs MAQDIS=PLACE and SHAAH=BOQOR marka maqdisha=boqorka meeshuu deganaa

Hargeisa - Harag-geys i.e. ap place where you take animal hide or Hargeisa - New Harar/Second Harar

Burco - Burcad? Butter? :?

Xamar - Comes from the arabic a7mar meaning "red".

Beledweyne (my favourite somali city name) - Obvious

Dhuusa Mareb -

Saylac - Maybe an afar word from the Adal empire?

Kismayo - Ku dhunkan maayo :?

Garowe - Somali for "Get away from me!" :?

Maydh (the noble town) - Mayd/Mayt, as in dead body because it holds the body of Sheikh Isaaq RA.
