G8 gives $50 billion To Africa

The outcome of last week's G8 summit in Scotland was a tangible recognition of what the global community could do for Africa, Business Unity South Africa (Busa) said yesterday.

While the G8's commitments would not end Africa's poverty, they did represent a more realistic approach to its challenges and the problem of HIV/Aids, Busa said in a statement. The G8 has offered Africa a US$50-billion aid package and debt cancellation.

Africa's own institutions would now be expected to take more responsibility for tackling the rest of the continent's problems by holding members to account for corruption and good governance, the association said. It did voice its disappointment that there was not more progress on trade at the G8 summit.
