Guys, someone who grew up in the west like me...what is there for me to do in Xamar as a past time. Im planning to move back soon (fock qurbo) but I cant help but think that it might get a little bit too boring sometimes. Shisha bars I see there are some but what about other things like cinemas, etc . Basically what do some of you who are there now do as a past time?

If the following happen, then I will fully believe the future is going to only get better:

1. Professionalization of the civil police and military and moving away from tribal militia

2. Creation of a strong municipal government that is small, efficient and widely based

3. Demobilization of TFG soldiers and moving them into camps outside the city.

4. AMISOM being deployed into Balcad, Afgoye, Jowhar and Marka by the summer.

If those 4 things happen, Xamar will spring forward.

MURAX,

Akhii, always make the best of whatever hand life deals you. I am out of the Somalia game by the end of the year. Its then off to Zanzibar, buying a nice house, fishing and swimming to my hearts content.

How is the tribal tension there? And how do people feel about returning stolen properties? :|

The security is quite amazing, really & troops & intelligence agents flood the city. Lol, a plain clothed intelligence guy or woman will board the bus & start attacking the government & championing Al Shabab in an attempt to see who will agree with him. Once the person that agreed with him exits the bus, he will be snatched by the nabad sugida. This & public cooperation with the security forces is what has severely devestated Al Shabab & overwhelmed its ability to carry assassinations, IEDs and suicide bombings.
Impressive. Inshallah all the al shabab qashin are cleaned from the city.

First off, gold thread. Thank you for the info about the situation over there.
I had a discussion with my brother about it today, he wants to visit there and asked if i wanted to come with him. I said i'd think about it,
but after reading this thread i'm done thinking. Inshallah i hope the improvements are even greater by the time of my departure (summer).

Any indication any of these 4 points will happen? How do you professionalize a police force, who will do the training?

I wouldn't mind Xamar to come back to Barisamaadkii but when "Nin aan talin jirin uu taliyo" there would be a problem. The notion that a Duqsi Quraan teacher would be the president of Somalia is unbelievably absurd. His lack of leadership is in full display because if the Ugandans and Brundians decide to leave tomorrow for any reason, in a matter of hours, the city will fall in the hands of the criminal Alshabab group regardless of the billions of dollars the international community has spent on this regime. Because of his lack of leadership, it is getting to the point where there is a even a state called Ceelbuur state that has its own flag. All these clan-based and so-called regional administrations are spinning up because there is no leadership and vision at the national level. Period.
Anyone who falls for these hurriedly-made video highlights of Muqdisho is daydreaming. Everyone should follow the sample of Puntland and Somaliland and build their native cities where their clans are based.
