Executive they forbid any arabic sign to exist, and all Arabic signs have to be removed within 3months. If it was something as simple of having Somali signs up, they could just say that without removing the arabic.

Why don't you move to f-cking Saudi Arabia then.

BTW
Somali and English, should be taught in Somalia. There's no need for arabic.

This stupid rules are from Ethiopians soldiers in Hiiraan. they bringing their stupid, backward, undemocratic rules to Somalia. some of the rules they enforcing in Hiiraan are:
You can't get water from wells at night and some days (only ethiopians are so backward they will think about banning water)
you can't ship goods and fruits to other parts ( only ethiopians will restrict business and goods, the same way they lack behind in business in africa)
and now, you can't write in Arabic? what a nonsense, I will write whatever language, I want, they need to go.

PO, I think you could very well be right. Look at the people making it seem like they are protecting the language--absolute jokes wallahi from what I have seeen whose use of Somali has been pitiful on this board.

Colonel, go learn about federal. Federalism has supremacy clause; local law can never trump national law. If they disagree such as when the some states disagreed with Obama's health bill they can bring it to court.

Abdisamed, it's one of the things I laugh at. These people are so dense its not even funny wallahi. A paramilitary in temporary control of Beled-Weyne with Ethiopian troops is now "Somalis in Somalia." Haku taagnaato.

Shaab, I would say PO is right althought I will say maybe upwards of 40% of Somali is Arabic. I am currently advancing in my Arabic studies while also taking a Qur'anic tafseer course. I am constantly surprised at the degree to which Somali shares similarity in vocabulary with Arabic.

Igorance breeds fear and intolerance. Like PO said people need to stop projecting their insecurities.

The`Republic wrote:Force, force, force. Wallahi they and a lot of these ignorant kids who spoke in this topic remind me everything I hate about Africa. Force, force, force. No rationality, no respect for difference, no room for creativity, no room for tolerance, no room for CONSENSUS.

One day this one group comes and they say MY way, MY culture, MY values, MY system, MY world view. The people can't take anymore and then another group takes advantage and removes the one before. Immediately like they are suffering amnesia, what came before is thrown in the dustbins of history without anything to learn from and it becomes MY way, MY culture, MY values, MY system, MY world view. Cycle X2

Whether you agree with this or not, this petty action of intolerance is exactly a response to the intolerance prior. How do you cancel intolerance with intolerance? Even if you would like to see Somali-only signs...who gives you the right to dictate to other private enterprise that might exercise creativity and whatever business niche to include Arabic script if they so want?

The level of pettiness, short-term amnesia, inability to have foresight, totally lack of awareness and respect for difference, consensus, tolerance, inclusivity, and making every Somali individual free to express themselves legitimately in their own land astounds me wallahi. These idiots would be the first people screaming racism and discrimination if such a thing took place in the places their families have sought refuge and asylum in around the world. But oh no, the Somali in Somalia is not allowed the freedom of free expression.

At the end of the day it is about freedom. There is no justice without freedom and there is no freedom without justice. I am totally opposed to forcing the already suffering Somali people anymore than they have been forced. Let them breathe in peace and dignity.

Today Arabic writing...what tomorrow? No beards? No khameez on certain days? Isn't this what gave rise to the ICU against the "Ashahada-La-diri"? Isn't Al Shabab's intolernace now giving power back to another opposite force? Where would they intolerance lead back to except passing their limit to the point they tilt the populace back?

Short-term amnesia and everything despicable about an unenlightened society is our real curse, nothing else. This just reeks of a strategy derived from that, just another point in the cycle. Yet there will never be a shortage of those that will clap like headless chickens.
I don't understand how you go from this^

The`Republic wrote:Arabic's use in Somalia should be strengthened and while it is not at the level of consideration towards Somali, it is right to be considered a special language of the Somali people and which should be protected by the constitution. The Dutch school boy is as fluent in English as he is in Dutch. The same should exist in Somalia with Somali and Arabic. I think the language's use should become standardized and widely taught making Somalia a truly multi-lingual society along with Arabic. Somali is not a weak and flimsy thing that needs the ignorant fear driven xenophobia of weak and intolerant third world paramilitary. It existed before and will exist long after us. Strengthen Arabic until it understood as well as Somali and include English as well.
To this^

My opinion? Unless there is a large population of Arabic-speaking individuals in the area, government should have no say in the use of the language. If a sizable community requests Arabic to a be an official legal language, government must oblige and print in the language requested.

As to what people or private institutions can or cannot do with a language? Government should have no say.

Somali has many proto-Afroasiatic similarities with Arabic (since they are in the same macro-language family), this is often mistaken for the usage of Arabic loanwords but they are not in many cases.

Alpha-

Well I am very proud to say I agree with your libertarian doctrine that says government should have no role dictating to private enterprise what language they can use on their signs, I don't get what your confusion is between my posts.

My first post is about acknowledging difference. My second post is about how to respect that difference. For example I support strengthening Arabic in Somalia but I do not believe in at it at the expense of Somali like Shabaab does. As a result I believe the government and constitution should respect my wishes while making sure to respect BV's by making sure to protect Somali as well. The difference is they will like to limit my choice, I am for protecting all of our choices.

Well you know who controls Hiiraan and ousted alshabab .... it was ethiopians soldiers not Hiiraan administration. there is no such thing as hiiiraan admini. there are two or three tribal based outside manufactured groups that claim they control hiiraan, but if the ethiopians leave tomorrow alshabab will be back, and those administration will go back to Nairobi hotels or London or Minnesota.
