Downton Abbey

So I started watching this British show set in 1914- WW1 in a Lord's manor in Yorkshire. It's a fantasical depiction of the social status between the upper class and lower class at that time. Though I think that it depicts the upper class too well, I still find the show somewhat entertainting. I noticed, though, that there are times where I need the caption on, because I find it hard to understand them. Has anyone had the same problem?

If u cannot understand Downton Abbey, then I feel sorry for u. They have 'dumbed it down' so much for the dumb americans, its not even funny. Frankly, I hate it. Yes, u r right----they are portraying the wealthy (or otherwise known as the aristocrats), a bit too well than Historically accurate. Every episode is catered to warm the heart of the dumb, freedom loving americans. Jane Austen and Shakespeare are turning in their grave, to think this gabbage comes from their beloved England. I am extremely vexed.

Lady Basra, first of all, I knew you would be in this thread, second of all, I'm talking about their accents once in a while, like the lady Edith, she sometimes muffles her words.

Downton Abbey's depiction of the tumultuous British aristocracy is very disciplined and admirable but it lacks more formality in the English language and I'm confused as to how you can't understand their basic English.

Either-how, very entertaining.

Sir Chaos, it is Lord Order that you are speaking to, let us not forget our manners. I wouldn't go so far to say it is a "smashing show", but it does bring about a certain diversity to our American screens.

Maggie Smith is the only thing worth to watch it. They also had an interesting story line that they did not follow, a gay story.lol (no doubt after realizing americans are becoming big fans. Yanks are not ready to see two men kissing lol)

They made a 'duke' gay, and he was making out with Thomas-- a handsome foot man servant. A duke? A duke can be immediately eligible to the throne. That is the only scene I ever watched. Maybe they should have me write for them.

Then they fell back in to the abyss of boring story lines that were nothing but a history lesson on servant hierarchy.

What I laugh at the most is the Butler Carter, he really personifies mental slavery of the classes. I respect Thomas and Mrs O'Brien the most because they are little rebels, though I don't like them personally.

Also, Lady Sybyll is the girl I'm most attracted to, in the show.

Actually, I think the portrayal of butler Carter is accurate of all the performance. Historically, most House master slash butlers, behaved exactly like him. Because he stands top at the hierarchy of the servants, he tends to exaggerate the importance of aristocracy and your place in reference. Everyone wants to feel important, to Carter he needs to be a slave mentally in order to maintain his status. He is genuinely loyal to his master. Its totally a dependent relationship. Thomas and O'Brien are wicked. They are little bizarre couple that need prayers more than anything. O'Brien has the delusions of thinking Thomas gives her attention because one day he will propose to her ugly irish face. And Thomas is a hustler who always is upto something. I am surprised they don't give him more parts. That part has the potential to make the show amazing. Lady Sybil is an idiot. Running away with the house chauffeur? R u serious? I find that offensive and very very anti romantic.
