How come Somalis in Canada cant speak Somali

I've noticed this strange phenomenon that 95% of Somalis in Canada under the age of 25 can't speak Somali fluently and the majority of them can't even hold up a short conversation. This is for those born here or came here before hiting puberty. All they can speak is basic Somali at best. They can understand though. Why is this? Somalis their age in the diaspora are more fluent then them and the parents in Canada do speak Somali to their kids.

True, I have a few relatives their who've mostly grew up their, that speak little to no Af Somali, I blame the parents who chose to speak english in their household.

like rabshoole said, i think the parents play a role in why their kids forget their own language by not strongly setting a clear boundary as to when the kids come back from school, no more communicating in english inside the household.

I am over 25 now, born and bred in North America, still in my 20s mind you. *Hangs head in shame.* It's a little too late for me to be dhaqan celis. I was never a dysfunctional child, my tongue just experienced somali amnesia by age 6, coupled by my parents speaking to me in English after that point in time. My Somali just suffered. Yes they speak 5 languages fluently and I speak 1.5. For some reason hooyo and aabo would rather speak to proficient Somali speakers, their patience with me is thin. I feel like a retarded child in their presence excuse my lack of political correctness. We tend to be overly apologetic around here.

Idk wallahi maybe it depends on where u live am speakin on behalf of Ottawa somalis I have been in dis city long time I realized djboutians , issaq children born or wat ever noe good somali my lil cousin ashley age 6 speaks french , english , somali but south somalia kids don't noe somali almost 90 percent of them

^^ I am from the North with roots in Djibouti, Somaliland and Ethiopia. I have met Southern Somalis that speak Somali more fluently than myself and they were born here or came at an early age. It has nothing to do with your tribal or regional association.
