Which are the three most popular somali songs? Songs that almost any somali adult can sing/mime to.

In my opinion, the following three.

3. Neyrus by the queen and king of voice ; Magool and Mohamed Saleebaan
2. Hooyo by Mohamed Saleebaan
1. Beledweyn

It is a tie between 1 and 2 but I still think Beledweyn beats Hooyo.

Hooyo by Tubeec is number 1 for me..

Off topic. Jalle can you tell me the story behind this song. I heard it's actually a true story but nobody would tell me anything about it.

You could be right. But since "Beledweyn " was taught in school in Somalia (it was complusory reading for language/arts clases), every 30+ somali knows it.

No, I don't know the story behind that song. I know the stories behind Beledweyn and Hooyo though. Hadraawi who composed both of them has talked about the story behind them.

Hurdo. I don't know who the name of the female singer but it's pretty old and for some reason many older women know it.

Is it Hurdo kama lado by Duniya Ahmed Barrow?

It is a good song but I don't think it will even make top 10. I love it.

P.s. The fourth spot will probably be a song by Cumar Dhuule or one of Samatar's/Magool's many others.

I heard Amaano was a young girl he raised and looked after. Somewhere along those lines he fell in love with her and composed a song telling her how he cared and looked after her. Not sure if Oday Tubeec was talking about himself though.

LOL. That will not even make the top 100s saaxib. It is like the dhaanto craze. We are talking about songs that can be sung by almost all somali adults (30+).

Songs of that era were dominated by three SL dudes; Hadrawi, Abdi Qays (AUN) and Gariye (AUN). They were about their life journey and adventures. They all had a story and a meaning.

No doubt Beledweyne is one of the all time greatest songs because of its composition, sophisticated lyrics, narrative, story/event and the overall structure which was very innovative and unique. He broke many rules and defined new ones in that song...it pave the way.

#1 Beledweyne for me

As for the other two, I don't consider them in the top five but all were written by Hadraawi (Beledweyne, Nayruus and Hooyo). By the way Nayruus is Farsi for New Year.

That's why Hadraawi is the #1 Abwaan.

but i grew up with multi cultural songs, canfaari, sudani etc

for example don't you think every somali can sing this one? Or am i being biased

what somali cannot sing this mohamed wardi song!!!!! I know it by heart i was raised on it, or maybe only Galbeedis know it??? Let me know if yall remember this one

he did the event in addis ababa 1993 many somalis attended BTW

Another favorite of mine is Baxsaaney Hargeisaay by Salaax Qasim. It was written by Hadraawi. Gariye, Abdi Qays and Hadraawi were sent to southern Somalia to teach and once again its a true story. He is sending his best regards from a place near Marka Cadey (can't quiet remember the exact town could even be Marka itself).

In this moment, Gariye and Hadraawi were in the south while Abdi was back in Hargeisa. He was sending them news about Hargeisa and Djibouti.

Where did you grow up? We are not talking about our favourites saaxib. My own favourite will probably make top 5. Shariif Abdalla, 30 sec
