Something similar to that, though not as big, opened in Ottawa last year. This past Ramadan they invited the community for Iftars every Saturday, very welcoming people.
It's also become the new spot for Somali weddings

The five buildings are a mosque constructed using 16th century classical Ottoman architecture, a cultural center building, a recreational building with a restaurant, a traditional Turkish bath, indoor pool, sports center, and a guest house.\
Government of Turkey is spending $100 million on this project.

I wonder how open this place will be.Methylamine wrote:Something similar to that, though not as big, opened in Ottawa last year. This past Ramadan they invited the community for Iftars every Saturday, very welcoming people.

You know the usual suspects (Pakistanis and Arabs) are always hijacking masajid, especially the Desis.
The Turks don't really mingle with other Muslims here and they stay to themselves.
Also, I wonder if an establishment like this is a counter to the "Wahabbi" funded projects around the world and the Turks are now putting their imprints on things with their diplomatic spending spree.

It opened right before Ramadan and so many people across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area have been coming out. People from New York/New Jersey also making day trips to see it. It's become a tourist destinationMethylamine wrote:Something similar to that, though not as big, opened in Ottawa last year. Anyway, they've been very welcoming. They have iftar every night, taraweh, Imam has a nice recitation.
It's a very calming place and brought a lot of people in one place.
And I've seen a lot of Somalis out there

Re: Turkish American Community Center in Maryland
I dont know how it is in your country but here in the US, especially in a diverse area like the DC Area, lots of Pakistanis and Arabs have immigrated here. And historically African American masjids have been run over by Pakistanis in some places... and in others, Arabs have taken over the boards.abdikarim86 wrote:What did you mean by pakis and Arabs hijaking misaajido?
Its really annoying actually. Thats why I said this Turkish masjid won't be hijacked. You have a lot of people coming to it but the Imam is paid by the Turkish govt, the President of the Center is paid by the government, and they have other government people there along with the volunteers. It's a wholesale operation.

It's so empty and tranquil in the morning. It's empty completelyjamal9 wrote:FAH, make sure you go to pray there bro. No more excuses to miss fajr/isha salaat since mosque is close by ur home. u might find a beautiful turkish lady for a wife.
The mosque was full masha'allah for Eid and the entire compound was filled toward the cafeteria, they had Turkish Airlines sponsoring breakfast right afterwards

They're gonna close it to the public after this weekend cause the construction isn't finished yet. Lots of house keeping too.
The non-profit is called Diyanet Center of America. Since they're an NGO, they need donations to pay their bills. The $100M from the Turkish govt was to construct it.
