The Area of Somaliland towns and other towns in the horn

Postby abdikarim86 » Mon Jul 13, 2015 9:47 am

I bought this programme with the latest satellite pictures.
It also allows you to manually measure the area of towns.

Remember this is only area, population density is another matter

Hargeisa - area 62.98 km2 - image from April 2015

Image

Burco - area 21.58 km2 - image from May 2015

Image

Boorama - image from June 2015 - area 11.11 km2

Image

Laascaanood - image from June 2015 - area 6.83 km2

Image

Berbera - image from March 2015 - area 4.21 km2 (I excluded areas with only warehouses and Livestock holding areas)

Image

The area being measured is within the white polygon - there may overestimations and underestimations since
I traced the polygon manually - I've tried to contain most urban areas within the polygon.

Towns/cities of Somalia

Mogadishu - 87 km2 - image from January 2010 (I could not find a recent image encompassing the whole city only partials, so
take with a pinch of salt)

Bosaso - 12.63 km2 - image from May 2015

Image

Gaalkacyo - 14 km2 - image from April 2015

Image

Beledweyne - 13 km2 - image from April 2015

Understood ...I understand it is not exact

I have stated that there maybe underestimations and overestimations due to the fact that I'm manually drawing on the polygons
I thought that any urban area outside the polygon would be compensated for by open spaces within the polygon.

it would have been better if the software can measure automatically. how ever I think you are accurate when comes that wajaale is bigger than both berbera and gebiley. wajaale is one of the underestimated major somali towns. I noticed its large population after I have watched several 18 may concerts in wajaale.

kingslawi

yes burao have several Suburbs, but it is hard to measure with the main city. suburbs needs to be measured separately.

Automatic measurements would be nice....it would limit any biases that I may have

Gaarisa - image from 2010 - area 25 km2 (This image is the most recent, also
there are a lot of open spaces within the polygon so take with a pinch of salt )
