What do you know about the upcoming Ethio-Lander Trade Agreement?

Bilateral trade talks between Ethiopia and Somaliland have entered the final phase. They are now preparing the full final frame work and scope of the upcoming agreement.

The paperwork is being prepared.

Here are summary of what the two sides want to finalize or push for;

A) Berbera corridor, which consists of highway linking the two countries, container terminal (initial phase will consist of 5 hectares), series number of dry ports including warehouses/storages.

B) Proposed railway system

3) Electricity/power

4) Education; civilian, military and government scholarships

5) Security; upgrading Somaliland's arms, training military and police officials, etc.

6) Aviation


The official agreement is to be signed in Addis Ababa at ministerial levels. The time or date is still either kept secret or unknown. No official time yet on this.

Opinion/speculation (Hawdian):

I suspect Somaliland maybe close to signing a port deal by this year. The reason I think this is because it was just weeks ago when the Bollore team led by the French ambassador to Kenya came to Hargeisa. It doesn't often happen to be followed by urgent meeting between SL and Ethiopia. On top of that for the two lay foundation stone for a project.

So I think they know something and they finally have reasons to move forward.

There was rumors that Silanyo was to visit Dubai urgently too but it's now being almost two weeks. We will see. If he doesn't it means we may see Somaliland-Ethiopia-Bollore together.

Is it possible that these talks are an annexation processes. Meaning Since Ethiopia miserably failed to get Asab city and port back from Eritrea (and for Ethiopia needing a port very badly) and Somaliland recognition becoming more elusive by the day, (Ethiopia never showing any signs of its willingness to recognise Somaliland) these talks may just be that both countries' leaders see some sorts of annexation of Somaliland ( as an autonomous regional state of the federation Ethiopia with special status) as a medium to long term solution to their respective political, economic and security problems/ challenges.

If Ethiopia even had thought that it will officially recognise Somaliland as a Sovereign and equal country it would have done so by now but I think Ethiopia sees an annexation rather recognition of Somaliland to be less expensive in both monetarily and reputation wise.
Therefore, these talks on "trade agreements" might just be the steps towards annexation be it fully or partial.

Of course both of their civilians population wont be happy about this and that maybe the reason why these meetings and talks always go under various titles and headings such as "trade talks" "security summit " etc.

I dont have an issue with the Berbera corridor or railway systems. As long as the government invests the revenues to diversify the SL economy so that the government does not become dependent on Ethiopia as a source of income.

As a matter of national security, SL should not import electricity from Ethiopia unless there are also plans to invest in domestic energy production. We cannot depend on Ethiopia for energy imports, this would be a woeful strategic mistake which would leave SL at Ethiopia's mercy.

There are many countries in the world that are leading educational centres, Ethiopia is not one of those countries.

There are many countries in the world with which SL can partner. For obvious reasons, our military should stay completely uninvolved with Ethiopia. We must build our military domestically and use international partners.

How is this even legal horta? How can they sign a trade agreement without the blessing of Xamar?

I find this embarrassing for Somalia that holds on to the believe that they are a sovereign country. This shows that they have no authority or control outside Xamar it's pathetic.
